Our play calling/offensive scheme

Am I the only one who doesn't agree with our current scheme/play calling?

What other teams fit our style? Do we have a more Florida scheme or a Baylor scheme?

Our scheme and philosophy is very similar to the team that scored 55 points on us Saturday, as well as the one in Oregon that gashed us for almost 1/2 a hundred.

Like Spartacus said, we are missing the employment of tight ends. If you line up 2 tight ends that both have the hands to catch the ball, you have run game blocking and still threaten the D with a pass option.

A couple games back, we completed a nice one to Branisel on a wheel route; not seen it before or since, that I can recall.

This is so dumb. At one time Meyer was calling plays at Utah. Yeah that playcalling didnt work when get got to the SEC?!? At one point, not to long ago, Malzhan was calling plays in high school. Yeah that playcalling isnt working in the SEC?!? It has nothing to do with "Cincy playcalling" not being able to work. With better athletes and more experience at the skill positions the playbook will open up and we will actually have evidence if his playbook works well in the SEC. Using this season as evidence is like using a 3 year olds first drawing as evidence of whether he will be a good artist.

I think the bolded part above is the best description of our situation this year and for the future. Coach has scaled back this year due to too many players being used to a pro set, and all our current players are not exactly right for his system. Also, our D is not helping the O at all, and that is crucial to giving the O more opportunities by not getting more 3 and outs. Our lack of D speed against a team like Auburn allowed them to go 70+ yards in two plays, and the special teams that gave up those long returns for TD's or short fields does not help either. It's not just the O, it's all other units helping each other. It truly is a process, and until he gets the type players he needs, we're going have some issues. The commitments to sign in 2014 is step one. I'm not judging anything until the 2015 season. He's going to need at least two classes of HIS recruits to see how much improvement he's made.

How dare you think you know better than the greatest coaching staff of all time

ha. I don't. Just give opinions.
I do think the whole comment about greatest staff is overplayed. Butch is a positive coach and is selling himself and his staff. No different, imo, than you or me sitting in a business meeting or interview and telling the other person that there is no one better for the job.
I'm glad he didn't tell the world we are going to get better with a mediocre staff. I don't think that would've gone over well.

A couple of things I saw was on third and short give me Marlin Lane all day long. He is our best straight ahead runner. We also need more direct run calls for Dobbs. He is productive running the ball so call it at least 10-12 times a game. Lastly we have seen some very bold and creative fourth down calls that worked. That also could be used for 3rd and short too. Mix it up

I have been a Vol fan for 48 years and have always figured that coaches always knew more than rapid (and sometimes unrealistic fans!)

However, I do agree on one thing. We are supposed to have such a good offensive line and yet we seem to never, ever run a quick hitter straight into the teeth of the defense on a quick count. We always run the option veer runs and without good sustained blocks it gives the defensive front too much time to react. A good offensive line can pay dividends here. . .I'd like to see Butch try it!

As far as passing goes with Dobbs - a relatively "safe" passing approach is necessary, at least for now. He sure has shown a strong arm though and the ability to run the ball. I think he could be a real good one!

Go Vols. . .and fans stay positive! We'll get it done!

According to Butch the offense is very scaled back.

I have no problems with the offense except we don't throw down field enough. Too many short passes and runs which allow the defense to load up the box.

One reason is the longer the throw the less accurate Josh is

If we don't fix the defense and special teams....offense ain't going to matter my friend.
