Our running backs - Jaylen Wright 9.6 ypc

I think there’s a couple games that Milton COULD win if the run gets taken away from us, but if we’re going to go as far as we think we can, that run game has to keep the offense fluent. I fully believe that was part of why the UGA game went the other way, we abandoned it too early.

Either way, the season is here, Vols are 1-0 and #WGWTFA

Thought so at the end of last season, that we would run more effectively this season which will take some burden off Milton. Last year we averaged 199.5 yards per game rushing. This year it wouldn't surprise me if that ticks up to over 230 per game. We have a good stable of running backs led by Wright. Wright ran with better balance and power yesterday. Small looks trimmer. Sampson has a good body lean and while smaller has the look of a Kamara type of back. What is the most striking difference from last year which was apparent in the very first drive, is that the RBs are going to be involved in the passing game this year. Our RBs had 6 catches yesterday compared to the entire season in 2022 when they had a total of 17 catches. Doubt that is an accident.

Great performance by Jalen Wright. I thought Milton looked good running the ball as well. I'd like to see more of Khalifa Keith too.

I was at the game and from a distance(upper deck) there were a number of times it appeared the backs went down too easily but who’s to complain with those numbers.

It look like they lost their footing a couple times which is to be expected Week 1 plus it seems to happen every time we play at Nissan… either way it will be a great year running the ball

I promise I'm not evidencing BVS, or nega-Voling, but asking seriously:

Since the running backs are normally the 3rd or 4th read on passing play progressions... does that mean our receivers (initial reads) were not getting open against Virginia?

I think that's a question that needs to be asked on Vol Calls Monday.

Both teams had problems with the brand new turf and its organic fill. It was either "slick" or "limited in its lateral resistance" as players were slipping when trying to cut hard on it.

It left me to wonder two things: Did they water the turf (required, according to manufacturer) too early before the game so that moisture in the fill evaporated, and (2) whose shoes will the Titans be wearing on it this season?

Legit question and may be a question others who attended the game live can respond too. Of the 6 catches, I think at least half of them, were when we split the RBs out and they were 1st option as somewhat of an extension of the running game.

They said that they put something on the field differently that what they used before, so I thought that maybe the footing problem

They’re using “organic” topping on the field vs the usual rubber pellets.

Why other than optics I don’t know

The first read in the offense is actually the pre snap box count. That decides whether we run or pass. Every time the box is light we run the ball no matter what the WR's are doing.

RBs were targeted 6 times with 4 of them in first two drives, not sure I see a problem.
