Did anyone else notice how many times the officials stood over the ball holding up the game? It was a lot. And many times it was because THEY (the officials) were not ready. We were actually lining up faster than the officials spot the ball. More importantly, it didn't look like we were in a rush. Just normal game speed for us. It is pretty incredible when you think about it. I wonder if Josh maybe had time and motion engineers at camp identifying and eliminating redundant actions. Most of our scoring drives were less than 3 minutes long but still were made up from a lot of plays. UVA actually won the TOP at 33 minutes. This type of pressure is like Kryptonite to a defense. They just can't get adjusted to the speed. They make a mistake and we score.

I think the General would've like Heupel's game. They both were big innovators. We need to make sure we keep him.

The best thing is that we will only get better as the year goes by.😁

This brings up a thought about whether our speed has any impact on the ability of the refs to catch all of the calls, which is pretty dependent on them being in the right place as the play progresses. Not sure how you'd figure this out though.
There are tradeoffs with everything, sometimes we can’t get in to the ideal play call, or shift players and change the formation. I’ll take those tradeoffs for our production on O!

Joe Rexrode with The Athletic was just on SEC Network Radio negatively framing Hype's offense and stating how Defensive Coordinators don't believe that offense helps develop defensive players.

@joerexrode covers UT and Vandy.

He sounded a bit skeptical that until proven otherwise, Hype's offense can't win a championship and no really good QB's have come out of his system.

Patrick Mahomes was doubted due to the offense Texas Tech ran and now look at him - arguably the best QB in the league.

We shall see.

If Rexrode doesn’t like our offense then it makes me love it even more.

Was it just me, or did we not really use our "warp speed" offense very much Saturday?

Seemed like we spent quite a bit of time just slowing the game down and letting the clock run.

Honestly speaking, that crap irritates me now lol. I have become spoiled by lightning strike TDs and big score numbers in the Vol column.

This offense did at times slow down which caught me off guard and felt a little weird. I think having guys that have had a couple of years to grasp the offense has paid dividends compared to the first year when everybody was on the same learning curve.

TOP 27:06 ÷ 84 plays = 19.35 seconds

I also like how CJH will slow it down, when prudent, once we're in the red zone.
I think he's doing this to let our guys catch their breath and prepare for the final push, but without substituting and allowing the defense to sub their bigger, goal line package.

A lot of people said that offense wouldn’t succeed against Bama as well. I would’ve liked to see a strong enough interior Oline and matchup up with Georgia last year again.

Rexrode is a hack. He wrote an article for the Athletic a week or so ago saying we were overrated and that Vol fans should pump the brakes on Heupel being a great coach. It was pretty pathetic.

It may not have been but it seemed like the longest game ever in person. So many changes in possession really slowed it down plus tv timeouts

No debate on Pat Mahomes being the best QB in the league in my opinion. He’s already on his way to being the in the goat debate. It’s a little early for that obviously, but he’s accomplished so much in so little time and has year after year been ridiculously good. I think Hendon will shut people up when it comes to the negative criticism. It’s no shock that our offense makes QBs look even better, but that doesn’t mean Great/Elite QBs won’t be able to have a lot of success coming from it.

I thought our offense was pretty flawless getting into position after plays.
Smoother than ever, really.
They also weren't being stressed by the opponent.

Our TOP will actually go up significantly this season given the new rule that the clock does not stop on 1st downs.

UT had a couple of false starts due to all 11 players not being set when the ball was snapped. Clean that up and get Mayes back and this will probably be another year of a top-rated offense for the Vols.

Sure I’ll grant that maybe our offense fails to develop QB’s in SOME ways, but hard not to argue it doesn’t prepare them MORE in some ways also. Can’t fathom a UT QB not being better prepared for 2min drives. And our QB’s are used to reading defenses quickly and efficiently. Trade offs.

But I’m convinced that this offense can still translate to QB success at the next level. Yes time will tell, but I just don’t see it as that flawed in development at all. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It seems to me this offense develops quick-read skills for QBs.
Mahomes is a generational talent.
Brady was expert with running the West Coast offense that was similar to what Lloyd Carr ran at Mich.
Both were system QBs.

It is a boring old song now, but Levis and Richardson were NFL darlings and neither could run even vanilla schemes in college.

The criticism about Heupel's offense is nothing.
Players are drafted based on potential, not really results up through their college career.

Plain and simple, our QB makes a presnap read off what he sees from the Defense. This gives him an idea of the upcoming play. The ball is snapped and he completes his reads and makes the best choice for that defensive set. That is what a QB is supposed to do in any style offense. SMH The whinners are not in shape and they don't have time to run a completely new defense out every other play.

We really ran a pretty basic O against UVA, and I bet we see the same tomorrow. Why give our real foes any tape? I guarantee you that Heup has plenty of wrinkles, when needed.
