OWH's Topic That Will Never Die XXI

I love the commercials! The food was tasty. I'm not a huge fried chicken guy I only have it about once every other month, so when I dine on some I want it to be great. It was piping hot and super crispy. Plus we were starving.

We didn't get back to the hotel until 1am and we didn't wake up til 10:50am so we were hungry when we arrived in Corbin at 2:45!

One last thing about how I felt at the race. It really goes to the credit of Tennessee and what not. I've grown up here and I've never felt "different" even though I've always been in a minority. So when I go someplace and I feel "different" it sorta smacks you. I don't want to sound rude to the race fans, because everyone was very kind to me, but I just got a feeling that I was an outsider. That kinda hurts when it's a sport that you've watched pretty much all your life. Anyway, I'm probably being overly sensitive, but it certainly made an impression upon me.

Sorry Nerd. (Wish we were out having dinner somewhere talking about this cause it would be a great conversation.)

Glad you enjoyed the chicken, but sorry about the other stuff.

It is what it is. I still have nothing but positive to say about the weekend, and everyone was really nice, so I'm not crying racism or anything. It was just a different feeling.

Do you recommend the bourbon trail? Where do you live now?

How was your weekend?

I feel bad for bringing it up, but I like to speak my mind in this thread and it's something that's been gnawing at me over the course of the weekend.

I'm glad you brought it up!! I know it's kinda hard having a conversation in a thread, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

First of all, here's where my perspective comes from. I'm a white female, graduated high school in '84. My high school was predominately black, and was one of the first integrated high schools here. (They turned over buses in '64 and all that.) I was fortunate that in my school years we were all aware of things, but it didn't affect us on a daily basis.

So, here are my thoughts and questions (if you feel like talking about it.) Do you think some of it was a black race fan? The typical Nascar fan is still a white male. And secondly, I'm wondering if some of it was people trying to NOT make you feel different, just because I think there are more people that want things to be better than there are people who are racist. And I think most of them don't know how to make that happen.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, it's hard to get it in a few sentences.

I'm pretty willing to talk about it. I didn't get a sense of racism really. Even from the folks who were wearing the confederate flag as a cape. It was a very subtle feeling. I actually was just texting my dad. At Indy or at Bristol I just feel like another guy. Just another fan. This weekend I just caught a lot of people looking and the occasional pointing at me with a sorta "wow, he certainly doesn't look like a typical NASCAR fan" gaze. It wasn't a look as of "I don't like this guy" but it was just a feeling of a lot of eyes on me, that I really haven't experienced growing up watching the sport. Makes me kind of sad. I suppose I need to be tougher, but like I said this is one of the few places I will open up to.

Like I said, this is all me being sensitive and soft. As my dad just told me, I've been spoiled and what matters is that I had fun.

It's an interesting climate right now. People on both sides of some hot topic issues are feeling stressed. It's going to inevitably spill over into day to day interactions.

And you're handsome young man (assuming the pics you've posted here are really you), so it all adds up to a few longer glances.

BTW, who won the race?

Haha, Thanks for the compliment.

Kyle Busch took a well deserved win. I feel sick saying that.

I'm really sorry for taking the thread in this direction, this place is for happy things, not my insecurities, so we should probably move on.

Talking about life things with friends is a happy thing. Don't ever feel sorry for that. I come in this thread all the time when I need to bounce stuff off of friends.

Guess I blocked out the Kyle win, I knew that. I don't like him.

I live in Georgia now, and I honestly haven't heard of the Bourbon trail! I've had a lazy weekend, and I have loved it.

Baptist, but I like to visit my Pentecostal friend when I get a chance! How about you?

I'm Lutheran. Got a lovely church in downtown Knoxville that my father went to. I was actually baptized there earlier this year.

Nothing like a good southern baptist church though. You feel properly cleansed and you can really feel the Holy Spirit during the service. Gives me tingles just thinking about it. God is amazing ain't he?
