Sandberg average was .285 and 282 hr. RBI 1061
Ozzie average was .262 and 28 hr. RBI 793
Sandberg stolen bases 344
Ozzie stolen bases 580
Offensive stats Sanberg has a big edge.
defense edge goes to Ozzie with a big edge 13 gold gloves compared to 9
The prick factor goes to Sanberg by a MILE.
Both were very good ball players and both have their #'s retired and HOF voter % edge goes to Ozzie by a huge margin of 91% to 76%
I think it's a stretch to say either was better by a mile. An arguement can be made for either player.
I have a hard time using Gold Gloves as a measuring stick. I do think Smith has the edge at a slightly tougher position, however, it isn't because of an award they hand to Derek Jeter every year.
When people start talking best ever position for position Ozzie is always the SS. Ryne not so much.

Ozzie Smith was great defensively - probably best of all time - but he's most definitely NOT a unanimous pick as the best SS of all time. You usually hear names like Wagner, Banks, ARod, Jeter, Ripken . . . Even Yount sometimes.
