I started seeing these signs up in church yards and on church signs.

P.U.S.H.
"Pray Until Something Happens"

What's your opinion on this? I'm specifically interested in the opinions of the religious folks on here.

I know the basis doesn't really hurt anyone outside of the one doing it, but I think it's a way to shuck personal responsibility. The only time I see it hurt anyone is homeopathy... which is very, very disturbing.

Disclaimer: I haven't heard a sermon about it, so if anyone has could you fill me in on what's usually discussed?

Those that abandon modern medicine solely for prayer are not too bright. You know that I am a man of faith. I believe God gave us an intellect. If we do not utilize that gift, we are denying one of his greatest gifts.

This is the type of insight I was looking for. Let's keep it going. What about the non-medicine related issues? What things would you pray for until it happens?

I don't believe in praying for frivilous things: material wealth or things of this sort. I believe in persistence in regard to things that matter: health, guidance, strength, etc. I hope I don't offend you, but I have prayed for you several times, my friend, and will continue to do so.

Don't worry, I'm not offended if someone prays for me. Just don't tell me I should pray for my soul. :hi: I assume when you say that you've prayed for me, that you mean that I'm included when you pray for your fellow human beings?

You are describing what I would consider wishing rather than praying.

Then enlighten me on what PUSH really means? Is it wishing for something? Is it praying for something and expecting it to happen? What exactly would they use PUSH for? Pray until the grass cuts itself?

That and for you individually/specificly. I will never pressure anyone to pray. That's not my place to do that. It is my job to have a genuine concern for others. I try to do that, but I never feel I do that enough.

I, too, have genuine concern for others. I try to help as much as possible. I put zero value in prayer (no offense), so I offer advice and other sorts of help. Tangible help, if you will.

I guess my point to this thread is: why not make something happen, instead of praying (hoping) that it does?

Jay, you are a good, solid dude. I appreciate and admire you approach to most of the discussions on here, even the discussions that tend to lean against your fundamental beliefs.

Thanks guys. I don't have all the answers. I just try to do the best I can in how I understand the nature of things.

I enjoy conversation with those that have different views. It forces me to examine just why I believe what I believe. I think that's how one grows as an individual.

Plus, I deal with hormonal, irrational teenagers every day. Believe it or not, this is kind of a sanity break for me. I see that there are people out there that are concerned about more than just where the next party is, who they are dating, or how they can invest $5,000 to 'improve' a car that is worth $500 by adding loud exhausts, a crappy wing, or overpriced rims. :)

Sounds just like a woman I work with that just moved here from North Carolina. She had literally never heard of an atheist until she saw me reading God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens on break one day. She's the sweetest lady, too.

None taken. Faith/prayer without action is useless. One must be willing to do their part also. To put it in economic terms. A person on welfare hopes to get rich. If they remain on welfare, it will never happen. But, if they take some personal initiative, exercise ethical behavior (kinda Hiratio Algerish, I know) , and seek out good advice, their chances of making that a reality greatly improves.

Wow it sure is nice to see an actual religious discussion going on. Here is my slightly educated view of religion specifically Christianity. First of all, for healing we all know that prevention is best. Remember those who believers that the God of the natural, like gravity and weight gain, is also the God of the supernatural like miraculous healings. Personally, when I pray I really focus on attributes that I can work on that will strengthen and uplift me so I can accomplish my goal. Such as strength or extra concentration at work, and not something like make the day go by faster. Additionally I believe wealth is something we all should pray for to increase, if that is something you are interested in building, but I ask God to provide more work for me or give me wisdom in my investments that type of thing. I know many doubt the power of prayer but I have been on several trips to foreign nations where I have seen things that cannot be explained away without the supernatural coming into play.

Its a slogan I have seen at different churches and heard many sermons preached on as well. As far as what/who your encouraged to pray for, that is left up to the individual. It is PUSH (ironic) to get people to pray more. I have prayed for several members or friends on this board, and prayed for many different things regarding the same people.

I know many prayed for me during my relapse. It was appreciated more than I can express. Fortunately, I am nearly 100% back- ornery and sassy as ever (to my wife's dismay :)). In my heart of hearts, I feel those prayers were very helpful.

I think it would work best at an A.M.E. Zion church with Salt N Pepa's "Push It!" jamming loud and the preacher leading everybody in a freestyle jam. That would be awesome!

Yeah, I'm not cool with that either. Also, praying for more work or wisdom in your investments seems like playing word games with the big fella. Why beat around the bush? Mo Money!!!
