Big 12 and PAC should just merge.

Baylor
Texas Tech
Oklahoma State
TCU
Kansas
Kansas State
Iowa State
Colorado
Arizona
Arizona State
Cal
Stanford
Washington
Washington State
Utah
BYU

Maybe toss in:

Boise State
Houston

Honestly that's not that bad all things considered, and composed of all teams west of the Mississippi. Could always still keep/add schools like WVU, UCF, Cincy, etc. if you want a completely national presence.

So where do you think Oregon and OSU should go? Big 10?

That main list is very solid for a football-oriented conference.
I think it would work better for B-ball if they had sub-conferences with the Pac teams in one bracket and the TX/Midwest team in the other.
Houston fits with this outline very well.
Boise just brings near zero tv audience.

No offense to OP, but SMU doesn't make much sense for the PAC12. I understand wanting a presence in the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex, but I think they cheapen the brand immensely. UNLV might be marginally better. The tv market is strong and no college football program competes within a very large radius. They are no football powerhouse, but they could get competitive with a major conference membership.

I always thought SMU should have sued the NCAA for hundreds of millions of $$ for destroying their earning potential. It was a borderline RICO/racketeering mentality at the NCAA at that time regarding SMU.

The newly re-oganized WAC is like that. THey brought football back at FCS level, and took in some Southland Conf teams. They now stretch from West Texas through Utah to Cali. They have their divisonal play set up to favor team travels.

One thing is for sure. The PAC 12 isn't going to rebound like the Big 12 by adding Houston, Cincinnati,UCF and BYU. It's going to end up a gloried mid-major conference that will fizzle out unless conference realignment is involved.

The Big 12 will also be a glorified mid-major. By 2024, 1/2 of the Big XII will be made up of members that were mid-majors less than a dozen years ago. The remaining 1/2 are the historical bottom tier of the old Big 8/SWC.

TCU, SMU, and Houston were once long time members of the SWC. A P5 of the times. THey just got left behind. Rice as well, but they will never get a chance to go back to a major conference.

I don’t think WVU has ever been in a mid-major league. The Big East had an automatic BCS spot.

Pretty sure OSU has the academic standings for the Big 10. Actually, think they rank higher than Oregon in research. Also, I think Nebraska isn't in the AAU anymore.
I never said Oregon State isn't a good school. I said the Big 10 doesn't take schools that aren't AAU, and they don't.

Nebraska lost their AAU recognition after they were already in the Big 10. If Oregon State wants to get in the Big 10, they'd better find an AAU sponsor.

It's dumb but the Big 10 are pricks like that.

@PA Vol you may be right .
I’ve been following this guy since last year’s announcement of USC and UCLA to the B1G. He seems to be in the know:

One of the rumors is that the Big 12 went to the PAC about merging and the PAC declined. What a colossal mistake that was

I don't think any serious "merger" talks have taken place. It's more of a who can raid who situation. If I remember correctly, the BIG 12 went after PAC schools to strip the conference as soon as USC and UCLA announced intentions to jump ship. Not a friendly situation.
