how come south alabama was able to return that kick that the holder blocked?

My guess is that it became a live ball the second it touched the hand of the holder. I know that, obviously, if the ball is caught while it's still in the air, it's returnable. We've seen touchdowns that come from that. I believe once the ball touches the ground, though, that it becomes dead. However, if the ball is blocked and falls behind the line of scrimmage, that the offense can move the ball, which we saw in that SportsCenter highlight a few weeks ago.

So since the ball was touched by the holder after the kick and behind the line of scrimmage, my assumption is that this makes the ball live to both teams.

Although it doesn't show up on the stat sheet, Palardy has also been fairly proficient in directional punting this year.

I think this year proves that Palardy has had some sort of nagging injury going on for a while. I know from personal experience that an undiagnosed muscle that is pulled/strained can bother you for months or years if you keep using it and don't know about it, especially for a kicker if its in the hips/lower back area and just think its sore or that you're doing too much.

Butch said that Palardy felt more comfortable doing both kicking and punting duties. He's an outlier, because most kickers never feel like that. Given his results this year, I don't think you can argue with him doing both.

I just wanted to post a few things on Palardy. He was getting a lot of hate in the off-season that I really think he didn’t deserve. Butch has done a great job with him so far this year.

He leads the team in scoring, is 21-21 of XPTs, seems like he’s getting the ball off well and high.

He’s 80% on his FGs, with his one miss coming at 52 yards last week. Some NFL kickers can’t pull that off, especially when their holder blocks it... He’s averaging 2 yards better per punt than our opponents thus far with 5 of his punts being over 50 yards and 8 inside the 20, and only 3 touchbacks on 21 tries.

That’s some good numbers. Also, he’s recording nearly 30% of his Kickoffs as touchbacks. That’s a big number bc it cuts down on big returns.

So, congrats to Palardy and to Butch Jones for really coaching this kid up and giving him a good start to his Senior year. He’s one of the few bright spots from Kiffin’s class. I hope he continues to have success on the field and makes a clutch FG for us this season.

His one miss is due to the holder not moving his hand out of the way.
