Past Decade of Vols Recruiting

seeing how well we recruited relative to our performance the last 10 years, we have to be at the top of worst under performing programs of the decade, probably alongside USC

I was here for all of those eras. Lol.

Jones was a decent recruiter. But he built those top classes on in state talent and legacies. And Jones also took fillers as well, higher ranked players that no bigtime teams were pursuing.

Dooley was mostly all fillers in his classes. Honestly almost all of the players he recruited were not pursued by elite programs.

Pruitt started off slow but has improved every year. His staff has probably recruited better nationally against elite programs than anyone since Kiffin. Henry T, Morris, Wright, etc were all targeted by elite programs and still ended up at Tennessee.

It’s interesting to see Dooley and Jones sell early and then get progressively worse once the rubber meets the road. Refreshing to see the opposite for this staff.
I think the biggest two factors here are the ability to coach up player, and most importantly, NOT having the continual defections, which made us an eternally young team under Butch. Next couple years, we're getting to be a more veteran team, and even though we're not top shelf talent everywhere, having a veteran team matters if players continue to develop and buy in.

With the end of the season turning out well, and good haul yesterday, I was thinking last night that it's "starting" to feel a LITTLE like old times. Gotta keep the W's coming...

Said it in previous post also. Injuries AND early defections kept us from realizing benefits of those good classes...ofcourse CBJ coaching didn't help either...

Good point, Tennessee had the highest attrition rate in the SEC I think during that time. Someone I'm sure will correct me if I'm wrong.

All this shows me is how poorly the previous staffs could evaluate talent and or develop talent once the players arrived on campus. Absolutely pathetic.

Our mediocrity despite the talent butch was able to reel in is sickening...

Kiffin's 1-2 classes were elite but evaporated when he left. Literally almost none of his players finished here.

Dooley of course had the ridiculous year with an OL which tells me he didn't know how to coach period.

Butch couldn't develop at all.

What a decade....it wouldn't be a stretch to say Pruitt is already the best recruiter over this time period. His last class will turn out worlds better than either of Jones top 5 finishes.

Yeah a decade to forget as far as UT Football is concerned. I think time will tell on Pruitt and recruiting. I think player development is already night and day and that should be the story. If he has a top 10 class and can out develop other coaches then we can at least be on the bubble of special things. A big IF still. Let's see if they pull of beating the top teams in the next 2 years.

I believe this staff can build a quality SEC team that is an above average team out of much less than the 2 previous staffs. So I'm very hopeful if we can stay in the top 15 recruiting that the future will be much better. When we can get top 5 classes, this staff can develop National Champion quality teams.

You can't really count the first class. He only had two weeks before the dead period to try and do anything with a class that was handed to him by Lyle. Contrary to popular belief, coaching in the bowl game for Bama had little effect on what he could have done with that first class.

Kiffin had what turned out to be the single worst recruiting class in Tennessee history. The top 3 mentioned in that list of 4 or 5 ended up as busts by underperforming and/or transferring, getting kicked out of school or in jail.

I say lets close out one of the worst decades in Vols history with a bowl win and go into the 20's like the 90's.....
