As far as I'm concerned, as long as she wants to continue coaching. She has always done a lot of behind the scenes stuff people know nothing about like signing an autograhed picture and mailing to my mom as she died of breast cancer. I know she supported a ot of people like that She single-handedly built the program and brought the interest to college girl's basketball. She's a pillar at UT as it is and should be as long as she desires.

I don't think anyone disagrees with you. It's her job until she says otherwise.

This has got to be the most unnecessary thread in a while. In other news, the sky is blue, gravity is still in effect, and taxes are due next month.

I think she should stay with the program as long as her health allows it. It hurt me to watch her the past few games.. she just looked as if her mind was somewhere else. Even though I hate to say it, I think that was her last game as the Lady Vols head coach. The disease she has is such a terrible one, and can be extremely aggressive. I'm not selfish, I want what is best for Pats health. And if anyone has ever dealt with dementia, you know how hard it is on the person experiencing it. Prayers for Pat. V, B.

I said something like this in an earlier thread. I've dealt with Alzheimer's in my personal life. The job is hers as long as she wants it, but we need to also be ready to let her go. She and her family have a lot to deal with and we owe her this respect.

There has to be a Catch 22 somewhere in this thread. I think the world of Pat, however, I can't see getting someone to come in here and coach with Pat looking over their shoulder. Most unusual situation~~~The present staff is good support, I don't see them running a topnotch program with the Baylors, Duke, NotreDames and the like. This is going to be painful in some respects, lack of a superior team, getting someone who is willing to meet the criteria I have spoken of. I am glad I am not the man at the top who has to make this decision!!!

I think Pat has coached her last game. You can see the difference in her health from the start of the season to the middle and to the end. I disagree with people that say she should be coach for as long as she wants. If she has to have asst. coaches to do most of the decision making now then how is she going to know when its time to step down? I love Pat and she has put women's BB on the map,she has nothing else to prove. Her health is not going to get any better. I wish she could coach another 3-5 years but it's not going to happen. It's time to bring Nikki in and let the greatest coach in women's basketball history rest. Like I say, if she has a hard time remembering and is forgetting things now then how is she going to know when it's time to retire?

I have posted several times about my experiences with this awful disease. The unpredictability of what will happen to her, what she will do, what she will say, etc. should tell everyone that understands it that she cannot handle the role without full time help or making the role ceremonial going forward.

Barring her voluntarily retiring, the only way for this to work IMO is to announce an interim or regular co-HC with Pat. The recruits already know what's up and it will continue to negatively impact that aspect if left as is. As much respect Pat deserves for what she built, she is not bigger than UT women's basketball. The program will go on and can succeed at a high level if they handle this right.

NO, the program has declined drastically as a result of her having this disease. Five years ago, the Lady Vols were anchored as a top 2 or 3 program nationally. Now, we aren't near that level. There is a reason for that drastic drop-off.

The court at TBA is named after her. It's about the University of Tennessee not the University of Summitt. Retiring now is what would be best for her AND the University. Anyone wanting her to continue coaching is thinking rationally.

Completely agree!!!

Here is my concern though in the whole matter. We have all noticed the changes just in this year alone so what if she says she wants to come back next year and things get ever worse for her? Do we suffer thru that and ever worse why would we want her to be put on the public spotlight like that?

Her family sits her down and attempts to reason with her why it is not a good idea. If that doesn't work, as much as I hate to say it, she should be forced to retire.

Pat will decide when its time as she should and more than likely that will be pretty soon.

As to the decline of the program you know what you have when your complaining about making the final 8. She played a large role in not just making UTs womens program the best in the nation but making the game as whole more popular. In turn that has raised the level of parity in the womens game emensly.

You and a lot of people on this board are fast approaching a defining moment, are you LV program fans or fans of Pat's LV program?

Considering I know her and most of her family I would say I am more of a fan of her as a person than a basketball coach. But to the matter, Pat coaching at the university that I follow is a perk.

Not sure what that defines either way but there it is.

Honest answer. AD Hart eagerly awaits the collective decision of your portion of the LV fan base. Will there or won't there be an LV Nation in a post- Pat world.

Harts decision will have nothing to do with me or my portion.

He has the money, the foundation and the following to find an excellent coach. Pat made that part a lot easier. Meeting the bar set over the last 40 years for whoever it is will be the challenge.

The following is the multi- million dollar question.
Will 12,000 plus show if Pat's not the head coach?
BIG TIME womens basketball exists because of Pat.
Will it thrive in her absence?

If they can be an extension of the excellence before them I see no reason why not.

All the pieces are there.

Let's back Pat and her program! She'll know when it's time. Hopefully we'll know by the end of spring if not before. Recruiting needs to start as soon as possible. Who wiill be making the trip, Pat and her son Tyler or Pat and some of her staff? We need to get back to at least the Elite 8 or Final 4. There are times when this team didn't put forth their best. It when they played Kentucky-the first game was a 1 point loss and the next time the Lady Vols blew out the Lady Wildcats. This team could have been a top 5 or 6 and was just barely outside that. They should not have lost more than 5 games and those to the top 4 teams.
