I agree completely. As a kid, growing up in Lansing, MI I was well aware of the stature and the dominance of Coach Summitt. She has been a legend and a role model to athletes, coaches, and just us normal folk, for as long as I remember.
I have loved watching UT Womens Basketball for a long, long time. And it is because of Coach Summitt.
When I took my kid to Rowing Camp at UT a few summers ago, we tried to sneak into Thompson-Boling and get pics on the floor. We ran into locked doors everywhere we went. Then a couple of old fellas caught us, noticed my MSU hat, and started talking womens basketball with us. They were childhood friends of Coach. They were there to have lunch with her.
They took us down stairs, took pics of us on the floor, showed us the entire facilities, took us to Coach's office. We didnt get to meet coach because she was on a conference call, but these two guys spent an hour with us giving us the greatest recruiting trip that we could have ever imagined. It was very important to them that my kid fell in love with UT, because they knew that her heart was at MSU. (we moved here before her Freshman year of HS) The talked about family. They talked about being a Vol for life. They talked about always being there for each other. And they talked about how Coach Summitt has built a culture of taking care of each other, no matter what sport you played, or if you were even an athlete at all.
I know this has been a long, and not too interesting story for the rest of you, but it meant the world to my daughter and I (no pics). Im a true believer that you can tell the heart of a person by the friends they keep. And just by that hour with her childhood friends, I know that Coach Summitt is not just a Hall of Fame Coach, but a Hall of Fame person.
Im going to miss you Coach, but I wish you the very best in the upcoming years.
