Wow. We knew it was coming just no way to prepare for it. Congrats to Coach on a fantastic career that will never be equaled. Congrats to Holly.
Wish the best for Pat. Wish she could still be adding to her all time wins mark, and never got this dreadful disease....
And welcome to mediocrity with Holly. Worst possible outcome.

:cray: that it had to end this way.

:salute: for all she did.

She should go down in the history books as one of Tennessee's greatest coaches right beside the General.

Didn't they say during the tourny that she has 74 former players and assistants actively coaching in the NCAA and Pros?

does this mean that her condition was getting worse?

i had hope she would live several more years before being truly affected

99, my parents know Pat personally and they've been telling me she hasn't been the same for at least the last 3-4 years. She may have just been recently diagnosed, but she has been dealing with it longer than most realize. Sad but true. Thanks for staying classy 99

It was an honor to have Coach Summitt as our fearless leader...not only in women's basketball but in many aspects involving the University of Tennessee. She has been THE MOST consistent variable in UT athletics in the history of the university....

...from the bottom of my heart, thank you Coach Summitt.

May your legendary fortitude fight on in your next challenge!!!

Absolutely NO WAY to quantify her influence and leadership.

She was a truly giant figure, not just in her sport but in all of college athletics.

I agree completely. As a kid, growing up in Lansing, MI I was well aware of the stature and the dominance of Coach Summitt. She has been a legend and a role model to athletes, coaches, and just us normal folk, for as long as I remember.

I have loved watching UT Womens Basketball for a long, long time. And it is because of Coach Summitt.

When I took my kid to Rowing Camp at UT a few summers ago, we tried to sneak into Thompson-Boling and get pics on the floor. We ran into locked doors everywhere we went. Then a couple of old fellas caught us, noticed my MSU hat, and started talking womens basketball with us. They were childhood friends of Coach. They were there to have lunch with her.

They took us down stairs, took pics of us on the floor, showed us the entire facilities, took us to Coach's office. We didnt get to meet coach because she was on a conference call, but these two guys spent an hour with us giving us the greatest recruiting trip that we could have ever imagined. It was very important to them that my kid fell in love with UT, because they knew that her heart was at MSU. (we moved here before her Freshman year of HS) The talked about family. They talked about being a Vol for life. They talked about always being there for each other. And they talked about how Coach Summitt has built a culture of taking care of each other, no matter what sport you played, or if you were even an athlete at all.

I know this has been a long, and not too interesting story for the rest of you, but it meant the world to my daughter and I (no pics). Im a true believer that you can tell the heart of a person by the friends they keep. And just by that hour with her childhood friends, I know that Coach Summitt is not just a Hall of Fame Coach, but a Hall of Fame person.

Im going to miss you Coach, but I wish you the very best in the upcoming years.

Thanks for that. Really great story but not a surprise for anyone who has ever met her.

Despite her competitiveness, drive and determination to win....Pat is truly a "people person". Her loyalty and caring attitude for even casual friends is well known. I've known only a handful in my whole (long!) life.

Pat is Tennessee, and every other coach today should thank her for for the popularity of womens basketball, and their salaries. She will be missed.
