Honestly, I dont think it's our business how much money she makes. People in sports salaries make no difference in our everyday lives. Is a coach's salary going to make or break our interest for the sport or team we like??

IMO, political correctness is costing the Vol Fans about 500,000 dollars per year.

So you think one of the best college basketball coaches EVER should be paid 800k/year when 2nd tier SEC football coaches make close to $2m?

In a word, yes.

Football brings in more money, so my example was poor.

However, there are HORRIBLE NCAA Men's D1 basketball coaches who make more than $800l/year. She deserves what she gets in salary at this point. She shouldn't get another raise until she wins another NC.

You'll go into "women's sports doesn't bring in enough revenue for the university to merit this pay" argument, but I think she's paid for herself already.

No. I think her pay prior to this raise was about right. She is a good ambassador for the university and a quality role model for young women. She should be the highest paid coach in her sport. I just don't see the purpose of continually raising her pay when she is already the market leader.

Fair enough. Who is the second highest paid women's BB coach and how much?

I would guess it's Geno.

I believe Pats raise is related to what Geno is set to make this year.

"Auriemma will receive a base salary of $200,000 for the 2004-05 academic year and that amount will increase by $25,000 annually through the contract. In addition to his base salary, Auriemma will receive $625,000 in the first year of the contract for institutional public relations commitments and that figure will increase $50,000 annual through the life of the contract. The two combined figures will be $825,000 for 2004-05, $900,000 for 2005-06, $975,000 for 2006-07, $1,050,000 for 2007-08 and $1,125,000 for 2008-09"

Anybody understand Fair Market Value? What competitve value is Tennessee getting by paying a women's basketball coach that much money? She basically has a blank check and UT is cashing it...

Okay, so she is an ambassador and represents the University of Tennessee superbly....isn't that her job? Besides, doesn't Summitt have private speaking engagements where she collects thousands of dollars per speech? I think everyone who coaches at UT right now is a great ambassador to UT, they just may not always be winning...I remember when Fulmer was the "great ambassador"....

Regardless, besidedes Connecticut, Summitt would not generate that salary anywhere else in the country. With this raise, that effectively puts UT's women's basketball program in the hole, their net profit last year was $26K, next year, expect it to be in the hole.

She doesn't deserve it and frankly, she is riding the coattails of the Tennessee Men's program under Pearl. Her comments about Pearl's raise was "I have feelings about that...." Oh really Pat? Wonder how she feels about the endorsement of Buzz Peterson now....probably wouldn't be staring a cool million in the face. I digress.

Face it people, Men's and Women's basketball are NOT equal entities, if you believe they are then fill out your Final Four Women's bracket with the 5 other fans in the area. With that said, she does not deserver her current compensation as equal to Bruce Pearl's.

I agree whole heartedly volunteer. This is PC run a muck. It is a slap in Pearl's face.

You know Fulmer gets grief almost everyday for not winning a natl championship since 98. Well guess what? The Idol Pat Summitt has not won a natl championship since 98. It is apparent that it is much more difficult to win a natl Football championship than women's bball. Why aren't people railing on Pat for not winning a natl championship recently.

Double Standard???? just a thought

It's NOT PC runamuck. It's poor money management (if you feel she's not worth $1.3m)

It SURE AS HELL IS NOT a slap in the face of Bruce Pearl. I'm shocked someone would even say that.

I agree completely with you. She's a great coach, but she doesnt deserve that kind of money when the football or men's bb program will have to be robbed to pay it.
