Pat Summitt

I do think that she should be the highest paid coach in her sport, but this business of keeping her salary above Pearl's has got to stop. IMO, this raise was for one of three reasons: to make her the first million-dollar women's coach, to keep her above Geno, or to keep her above Pearl. I think it has a lot to do with Pearl. He has only been here for one year, but if he keeps it up, he'll start to look underpaid again. If he wins an NC, what will he be worth?

I dont have a real opinion on her salary because I just dont care. She could make 5.50 per hour and I could care less, it has absolutely no bearing on my life. But here is one misquoted fact by the news and other sources. The net income from ticket sales is 26K. The total income from the jersey sales, merch., etc. is reportedly 430K. Just a side note as reported by Jimmy Hyams.

I said before that coaches salaries should be none of our business, but since this topic has really been made a big deal in the public, I wanted to get a mass opinion on everyone's feelings. I personally am indifferent to her salary. But I can see both sides of the argument to why she does or does not deserve her raise.

My opinion is that she is worth whatever someone is willing to pay her, bottom line. (I wouldn't pay her that much, but that's me. I am happy for her though.) I also believe most people object simply out of jealousy.

Living in Jersey, I can tell you that when people here I'm a Vol, they think 2 words: (I'll give you a hint...it's not Phil Fulmer:)

I know it's hard to believe but in some parts of the country, we're known for women's b-ball and not football. I don't have to like it but it's reality. The amount of respect that people (even opponents like Rutgers) have for her is unbelievable. She deserves as much as any coach male or female period...end of sentence. Some things are bigger than profits and this is a perfect cas. Go Vols!

BidDaddy, your opinion would change if you were a season ticket holder or support UT in any form or fashion, whether you like it or not, you are one of the many paying her salary...3.00 bottles of water at UT games is a pretty good profit, wonder where that goes....

I'm not a women's basketball fan. However, there are $3 bottles of water at every school. That said, I'd much rather Summit get the money instead of one of our 819 balding, fat a$$ assistant ADs.

I am a huge Pat Summit fan. She's a living Legend as is Bobby Knight.I think with what she has done for women's basketball, she should be rewarded.I'm a Fulmer fan but she has 6 National Championships and he has uno!

Anybody understand Fair Market Value? What competitve value is Tennessee getting by paying a women's basketball coach that much money? She basically has a blank check and UT is cashing it...

Okay, so she is an ambassador and represents the University of Tennessee superbly....isn't that her job? Besides, doesn't Summitt have private speaking engagements where she collects thousands of dollars per speech? I think everyone who coaches at UT right now is a great ambassador to UT, they just may not always be winning...I remember when Fulmer was the "great ambassador"....

Regardless, besidedes Connecticut, Summitt would not generate that salary anywhere else in the country. With this raise, that effectively puts UT's women's basketball program in the hole, their net profit last year was $26K, next year, expect it to be in the hole.

She doesn't deserve it and frankly, she is riding the coattails of the Tennessee Men's program under Pearl. Her comments about Pearl's raise was "I have feelings about that...." Oh really Pat? Wonder how she feels about the endorsement of Buzz Peterson now....probably wouldn't be staring a cool million in the face. I digress.

Face it people, Men's and Women's basketball are NOT equal entities, if you believe they are then fill out your Final Four Women's bracket with the 5 other fans in the area. With that said, she does not deserver her current compensation as equal to Bruce Pearl's.

Pat Summitt's salary should be at the top. She has done more for UT than anyone I can think of. In women's sports, how many coaches have packed the gym. She has been on television more than anyone in the sport. As the father of a female basketball player, I have come to realize the difficulty of getting recognition as a female athlete. Sports figures are grossly overpaid in this country. By comparison, her salary is definitely fair. She is a fantastic coach and more power to her.

Well if God is a woman, shes got to be Summitt!

Or if shes Ms. UT she would of put the better of the school in front of personal gain!

Or if she is the arrogant egomaniac she portrays 'some' times she did the right thing!

No, I wouldn't have turned it down and if anybody elses boss offered them a raise.............................................

Side note; that evil coach at South Carolina took less money, so his coaches could have more!

Calipari also took less money at Memphis to get his staff raises.

Do you know of any other coaches that should do the same or should have done the same Hat? :biggrin2:

Everybody loves a winner...even if it is associated with a lower tier piss poor product.

Ever wonder why Andy Kelly doesn't get the recognition he "deserves" for being the all time touchdown passer in arena league history?

Because most sports fans could care less about the sport.

Sorry LIO to be so harsh, but the law of supply and demand just doesn't work in this situation, regardless of how good of a coach or how great of an ambassador she is.

What happens if from here on out, Summitt never wins another national championship, fans quit going to games because they expect a championship (ala UT football fans), then they start hurting for money, but Summitt's salary will still be a cool 1.3 mil.

Of course, this is government and they make poor decisions all the time with other people's money.

I share some of your reservations about the overall quality of women's basketball. It's hard to watch much of the time. But in terms of positive publicity, the University could not pay Pat Summitt enough. You can't put a price tag on what it would cost to buy that kind of publicity.

Do I think we necessarily had to pay $1 million? No . . . but I can understand why we did it.

Just to let you know I am a season ticket holder since 1993. I have no idea where it goes, just as any other donation I have given. I just stated some facts that were given to me from a good source. I mean no harm or foul here, If she takes and gets her money good for her. Capitolsim, you gotta love that. If I have a product that sells in my region (I.E. downtown condos in Kville) is take it for all it is worth. Just my opinion in the small fishbowl of the volnation. She is making the best for her and her's. No foul on that. If the football team is in the tank for her salary, then I will quit giving.

WOULD YOU GUYS PLEASE GET OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE'S POCKETS?!

99% of you "anti-wealth" (because I was unable to get rich) folks would take that money and run in a heartbeat. It's all jealousy because it is more than you have, and possibly ever will make, cumulatively. All of a sudden because a major figure gets a big raise, they are all of a sudden supposed to GIVE IT AWAY to please you.

I barely make $40K a year, so it's not like I am a rich person protecting another. It's just being mature about the situation. Oh, lord what would we do if everyone was paid the same?? Sounds like the Soviet Union... Somebody tell me again why that didn't quite work out again...

Pat Summitt may or may not be overpaid (i think she is), but OH FREAKIN WELL. I'd rather hear about Barroid Bonds than people HATING on Pat Summitt because of her successes and achievements as a woman, have surpassed the majority of our unattainable hopes and dreams.
