PC Graphics card discussion

I like that setup a lot. MSI makes great boards, can’t go wrong with Corsair memory and PSU, obviously I’m a big fan of the case. I’ve installed that cooler on an AMD socket and wanted to throw it through a wall, but it may be easier for intel. EVGA is a solid pick for GPU, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them rated less than 4 1/2 stars. I’d throw in 2tb SSD for added storage, if you’re a file hoarder like me. Otherwise I think it’s a great build.

Thanks. I have another ssd and a bunch of eternal drives on my current setup that I’ll be moving.

You have me thinking about the cooler. I guess maybe I just just get an AIO.

I just built my nephew a computer last weekend and he got that same cooler, so when I saw it I just cringed a little. I’m sure it’s a great cooler, it just comes with crappy pictures-only instructions, so maybe just YouTube it first.

It depends on the game. Some are more GPU intensive, others are more CPU. As mentioned, resolution can play a part as well. Even the storage can play a part, with SSDs being much better than spinners. Depending on the situation, you could undervolt to improve temps and reduce throttling, but you can go down a deep rabbit hole with all the different tweaks.
Not quite like editing config.Sys and autoexec.bat to try to get better performance in the olden days.
Hah just saw I missed the quote and I was actually responding to a post from Monday.

I’m not having performance issues exactly, just trying to maximize frame rate. It seems as though with nothing maxed I could squeeze out more performance.

Get the Thermalright Peerless Assassin. It’s like $40 and goes toe to toe with the Noctua Nt-d15. AIOs are nice, but they have only a few years’ shelf life and when they go out, you are pretty much dead in the water. CPU will almost instantly trip thermal protections until you get a replacement. With good coolers, you can stay relatively cool even when a fan goes out.

Just finishing up building 2 12600k systems. I like how much cooler they run than my 5950x. My build is much cheaper than yours, I went with B660 motherboards that were half the price of that Z690. Z690 feels like a waste if you aren’t going to go DDR5 and if you aren’t going to try to overclock the processor(which even I have given up on due to diminishing returns and how well they can boost themselves). Don’t forget good thermal paste and to check QVLs. Also, check out EVGA P2 power supplies that are on sale on EVGA and Newegg. They are made by Superflower, who are one of the top quality manufacturers currently. I would also probably go for 1000 watt. The 3000 series Nvidias have “issues” where they have transient spikes in power demand, which can cause issues if you don’t have the extra 2-400 watts overhead. Also, being middle of the curve means you increase your efficiency

QVLs?

I have the same RAM and they work well with MSI Z boards, mine works well with MSI carbon Wifi board.

Love Micro Center. Hate that their good processor deals are in store only generally. But, I've done the ATL drive before to build a system.
Yea, I live about 40 miles North of the Marietta store. When I built my gaming PC 2.5 years ago, I bought a lot of stuff from Microcenter. Their CPU/Motherboard deals are great.

Decided to not wait on the 40 series and grabbed a MSI 3090ti :). Crazy the difference in the market from now compared to a year ago.
Disappointed but never order off antonline lol. They cancelled my order (even thought they gave me shipping info and stuff....so weird) and that bad thing is I already promised my current 3060ti to my stepdaughter. So used that as an excuse and grabbing a MSI Gaming Trio Z 3080 for under 740 and should be here tomorrow. Disappointed in not getting the 3090ti but might be a blessing in disguise as the more I think about it, I really dont need that card for what I want to do.

Nice. Where'd you order from this time?

Well evidently the hardest thing for me to find now are dang PCIe 8pins lol. My PSU only came with 2 of them and this hog of a GPU requires 3 lol.

Can't wait until someone releases a full-length 3PCIE->16 Pin or a much longer adapter. I honestly thought about spending $300 and moving everything into the 7000D so I can vertical mount it because the cabling is so ugly. We'll be partners on this lol, first one that finds it let the other know.

What power supply? I assume you could use on of the 8-pin y cables (I have no idea what they're really called)? No?

Can you explain this?

So our cards require a 16-pin cable that pulls power from 3 8-pin PCIEs. Currently, and to the best of my knowledge, there is only an adapter for this connection:
GeForce RTX 3090 Ti comes with 3 x 8-pin to PCIe 5.0 16-pin adapter | TweakTown
My 3080 ti had a 12-pin adapter that was powered by 2 PCIEs and eventually Corsair made a single cable that went from GPU to PSU and looked much, much cleaner. Look at that zoomed out picture of mine a few pages back and see that mess under the GPU? Picture one single cable replacing all that mess lol.

I gotcha. Makes sense. That's one huge card. lol.
