Here's the order of how it all went down from my POV...
1. CBP got fired and I knew hambone was going to screw things up.
2. Was at work and got a message that Cuonzo Martin was our new HC.
3. Said WTF (not what the blank, but who the blank)
4. Googled his name, wasn't impressed because he came from a weak conference but never made the tourney.
5. Went on VN (pre-stoked4zo account) and saw the epic meltdown.
6. Like an idiot made my screen name a little after, and now I'm left with regrets.
7. Cuonzo craps the bed for 3 years, I, and others lose complete interest in the program
8. We BBB and the excitement is back and all is back to normal![]()
The ugly fact is that, except for a couple years of Ernie and Bernie and Bruce's tenure, Tennessee basketball has been the the tantamount depiction of mundaneness. I'm pessimistically guessing that Hart's going to as-politely-as-possible fire CCM, hire some "pretty darn good" coach with a decent record and the funeral procession at TBA will carry on. Bruceball sells tickets and I'll pull for the man wherever he ends up coaching, because he WILL coach again.
The days of Don Devoe would be paradise right now! Don did pretty darn well.
Mick Cronin from Cincinnati- High school prospects want to ensure that when they sign with a program their coach will be there for the longevity of their eligibility with the team. Coaches target and begin talking to players sometimes as early as their sophomore or junior year of high school. So keeping a contract at around 6-7 years long lessens the likelihood of Cronin being axed by UC* while he is playing for the Bearcats.
*This would never happen. UC loves Mick and visa versa. But its good for the high school players to see that mutual commitment in writing.
If Lances tweets hold true, Mick Cronin will make roughly $1 million more in his new contract than the last time he signed an extension. Bringing the UC head coach up to the $2 million club is critical for Bearcats basketball. In the simplest of terms, this pay bump makes it that much more expensive for other schools to poach Cronin from Cincinnati. Now, we all know hes worth that money and more, but most schools wont take that risk.
Still, while throwing money at Mick will certainly keep him happy and ensure he wont leave Cincinnati if a more perfect job comes along, this is but one task among many that Bohn needs to accomplish on the basketball side. He still needs to address the outdated arena issue and give the UC head coach and his staff a larger recruiting budget. But if this news today is any indication, the new Cincinnati athletic director more than understands the situation at hand and will do what it takes to fulfill those needs for Mick Cronin.
With CBJ on board you never know, good coach at rebuilding a program.
I don't think the people making definitive statements that Pearl won't be back (such as the op) have anymore inside info than the people that think he will return. The only thing I'm sure of is that TBA will be an ugly scene next year if Martin is replaced with another unknown mid-major coach with no NCAA Tourney appearances when it's evident that Pearl does want the job back. I wouldn't want to be Dave Hart next year when we finish butt naked last in the SEC. To some degree. the UT administration has to care about what the fan base and boosters want.
