Pearl's Contract Negotiations

Tennessee is by far in the dominant position in this negotiation.

Sort of.

If Tennessee wanted to fire him, he'd be gone already. And, if the NCAA hammers him badly enough, they still will.

So it's a given that (a) they want him coaching here, and (b) he won't be if the NCAA forces their hand.

Tennessee is still dominant, and can change their mind at any time and go ahead and say never mind, just don't come back. But the fact that they clearly want him coaching here does give him some leverage.

The more he wins, the better his leverage, and the more he loses, the worse his leverage.

Not a huge surprise that the negotiations were stalled when we were 7-0, and now that we're fighting to be relevant his guys suddenly submit a new version of the thing.

piece omitted here is that Hamilton's ship is likely tied to Pearl and he needs this to work out well for UT.

Good point. Which is why Hamilton can't quite say what Lawvol suggested.

It's a mess, and really all either side (meaning Hamilton and Pearl) can hope for is that the team wins a bunch of games and the NCAA doesn't open up a full can.

Meanwhile the university itself just hovers in the background, prepared to cut both of 'em loose.

The only reason Pearl wasn't fired, in my opinion, is because of the timing of the situation. If Pearl's lying came out in June, he wouldn't be here right now.

It seems that Pearl is in no position to make stipulations. He should take what he can get now, because if he's fired, good luck getting another great paying job.
