3 Days - Chuck Webb vs Ole Miss 1989
If you want proof of how great of a running back Chuck Webb was in his freshman year with Tennessee football, he’s No. 1 and No. 2 on the Vols all-time list for rushing yards in a game. This was his breakout game. At the time, he was having to take over because of the dismissal of Reggie Cobb, a feature running back, in the middle of the season.
That made room for Webb, who may have gone down as the best running back in UT history were it not for a career-ending injury early into the 1990 season. However, in this game, he set the school record for 294 rushing yards against the Ole Miss Rebels.
The closest to this record is, well, Webb himself, when he had 250 yards in the Vols’ Cotton Bowl win over the Arkansas Razorbacks later that year. Behind his two games is Tony Thompson, who rushed for 248 yards against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
UT also replaced Sterling Henton with Andy Kelly at quarterback that day, and all the changes resulted in them suffering a 47-30 loss in Birmingham a few weeks earlier.
After two more wins, they were 7-1 and in the top 10, and with a young quarterback and Cobb gone, Webb had to carry the team as a true freshman. This was his game to do that. Ole Miss, who was 6-3 and would finish 8-4, fought tooth and nail, taking a 7-0 lead early and then a 21-17 lead in the middle of the game.
The only player doing anything for the Vols was Chuck Webb, and he ended up setting the school record for rushing yards in a game in the process. Webb’s play allowed the Vols to finally pull away to score the final 16 points, which gave them a 33-21 win and kept them in the SEC East.
In my honest opinion.................He's the 2nd greatest RB in UT history...........What could have been!

42 days…..Tony Robinson vs Auburn 1985
Tennessee hosted #1 Auburn early in the ‘85 season. UT had tied UCLA, but most everyone expected an easy Tiger victory.
The Vols defense was great all day, but Tony Robinson stole the show and ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated and into Heisman contention.
During the first drive of the game Robinson led UT on a 76 yrd drive, highlighted by a 39 yrd run. Robinson would throw two TD passes following Auburn turnovers, and the added two more TDs in the fourth quarter. His last two closed the door on any Auburn comeback.
Tony Robinson finished the day 17-30 for 259 yards an 4 TDs. This game was the starting point for the Sugar Vols.
There have bigger and better stat days in UT history, but this day in late September deserves recognition as one of the greats…..thank you TR

1 Day - Jalin Hyatt vs Alabama 2022
Jalin Hyatt recorded five receiving touchdowns in the Volunteers’ first five games of the 2022 season.
Hyatt equaled that total with five more touchdown catches vs Alabama , cementing his place in school history with a performance for the ages.
The junior wideout from Irmo, S.C., registered touchdown catches of 36, 11, 60, 78 and 13 yards from quarterback Hendon Hooker. In total, Hyatt caught six passes for 207 yards.
The five touchdown receptions sets a new Tennessee record. The previous mark was three, shared by Jim Powell, Carl Pickens, Billy Williams, Marcus Nash, Cedrick Wilson, Donté Stallworth (twice), Chris Hannon, Justin Hunter (three times), Zach Rogers and Cedric Tillman.
The five touchdowns tied Gene McEver for the most in a single game in UT history.
The magnitude of the game, the losing streak vs Bama, and the question of UT being able to complete nationally were all factors that make this a truly legendary performance.

We look at recent history with clear eyes. We often forget major moments/performances from the past.I concur!!
I know what you mean. I knew at the time that it was special but it took awhile for it to sink in that it was best ever kind of special .We look at recent history with clear eyes. We often forget major moments/performances from the past.
This game by Hyatt isn't that.
It's THE best performance in UT history. Period.
Every factor was there. The down years. The streak. Can UT ever be a national power again. Is CJH the guy.
Those questions were answered by Hyatt and Hooker.
I almost put Hooker in the #1 slot with Hyatt, but I think Hyatt deserves to be singled out!
Good pick! Was wondering if today or tomorrow.#1
