George Plaster said something yesterday on the radio that caught my attention. He was peeved because Knoxville gets College Gameday this weekend in spite of the turmoil surrounding our team and the absence of Bruce Pearl, and he was trying to pose the question of why Vanderbilt isn't on the national stage.

This led him to take it a step further and speculate that Tony Jones had something to gain from Bruce's suspension, which, in my opinion, is an outlandish claim. Did any of you happen to hear it as well? What do you all think?

Tony Jones isnt gaining anything with his 0-2 start to a team he should have beaten on the road and a team that he had a chance to beat at home. If he drops a game to Vandy on saturday then he might as well pack it up.

Maybe he could gain a look from another school. I don't think Tony would take Bruce's job, even if he could.

Even if he did stand to gain something, it's not like Jones engineered this to happen.

I didn't hear it, so I can't comment on the specifics of the context it was said in.

BUT, of course Tony Jones has something to gain from BP's suspension! He's getting head coaching experience in the SEC to put on his resume. He's getting interviewed on ESPN (it was obvious to me that he showed a LOT more character during his game 2 interview than game 1, like he watched his first interviewed and tried to improve....good for him!). This is his 15 minutes of fame. Not saying he's trying to parlay it into a better job, but if BP gets canned this year, Tony Jones will be out on the job market just like everyone else. Having been the HC at a major school (even on an interim basis), under tough conditions and national scrutiny, will help him A LOT when he goes to interview. I'm not saying he's happy about BP's situation, but it would naive to think that he doesn't look at this like it's a great opportunity.

I heard the comments as well, and Plaster has a point. What he was saying is that Jones was as much to fault as Pearl and although he was hit with recruiting sanctions as well, he gets the benefit of Pearl being suspended to become a "head coach" for 8 games and show himself to the coaching world.

Plaster can't help to show his love for his alma malter. Jealousy mostly.

At least he is a Braves fan.

The only reason the former Vandy radio man's show survives is because of all the Vol fans in the mid-TN area. I quit listening years ago.

That's probably a true statement. What that said, if this whole coaching staff gets canned, Jones will have a tough job trying to shake the stigma of being a part of the violations. Can't imagine many schools would want to deal with the headache and explanations necessary to hire someone with that type of baggage, and it's not like NBA teams will be lining up for Jones's services.

I dont see any lasting effects on anyone but Pearl. Jones didnt invite recruits to his house and he didnt plot the coverup and lies. It will always be on his "record" but I doubt h will witness any lasting effect.

Jones is getting in-game experience but he's only the "HC" for like a grand total of 48 hours. It's not like he is on his own as a HC for 8 full games, Pearl is still pulling the strings, just not on game day.

It is my understanding that Pearl asked all of his coaching staff, the recruits that visited home and the parents of the recruits to lie to the NCAA. If Jones lied to the NCAA, then
he in violation also.
A small university may take a chance with Jones. A university like Lane College, MeHarry or Austin Peay. That is the best he will get, even if he gets that chance.

If any Vol fan from East or West Tennessee listens to Plaster's show, you would think that his station is the flagship for Vanderbilt. Wrong . . . it is the flagship station for the Vols and they do a HORRIBLE job at it. I don't want them to be homers, just don't take every opportunity to bash us while we are down. What's worse is that Vandy dumped them for a lower powered radio station.
What Plaster, Donnick, Howard, Ingram and Wychek do to the Vols, 3 hour lunch (Travis and Doughty) make up for it.
AM 1510 actually did a better job at promoting Tennessee than the Zone does.

GBO!

College Gameday was decided before the Bruce Pearl saga. It's not shocking that he didn't know this.

The OP is blowing this out of proportion. I heard every minute of the afternoon show yesterday. Plaster didn't make a huge stink about it, he just brought it up, which is exactly what he is paid to do. He has a valid point about TJ, now what TJ does with it is another story, but he has a point.

Also, for anyone bashing 104.5, they talk about the Vols ALL THE TIME, all of the local shows. They have a pretty decent lineup throughout the day, and have some excellent guests to speak to as well.

I've lived in Knoxville and Nashville, and Knoxville's sports radio is complete garbage compared to what 104.5 brings. It's night and day.

104.5 does a TON of Vol coverage, and every single show personality brings up the point almost daily that they don't cover nearly as much Vandy stuff as UT stuff because of the huge discrepancy in the fanbase.

Ease off a bit, they do a good job.

The morning show and the 3-hour lunch are good. Plaster in the afternoon is terrible. Absolutely terrible. I quit listening to him too. He has nothing to offer but gut feelings and shameless self-promotion. For example, he supposedly used his Vandy connections to speculate on who would be Vandy's new football coach. He was wrong.

Plaster is as unbiased to UT as Keith Olberman is to the GOP.

I disagree 100%. 104.5 and The Sports Animal are Citadel Stations that are complete dumpster fires of broadcasting. 104.5 Runs interference for The Titans and Vandy, The Sports Animal is anti-Tennessee. The only thing the Animal supported that was related to Tennessee was Fulmer, and they defended him to the very end... which only goes to prove my point that they hate the Vols.

Basillio has the only pro-UT radio program in the State of Tennessee. Clay Travis just needs his own show either in the AM when I'm driving to work or in the PM when I'm going home.

104.5 offered Vandy half the money they offered UT. They gave VU an out to save grace.

All of Plaster's regulars are VU homers Drew Maddux,Eddie Fogler,Will Perdue and Tim Thompson does color for their games. The other shows are fine. Of cource George and Willie are VU grads. They run a promo about Chris Low Talking about the vols. But when he comes on they ask him about everything but UT.It's crazy.
