Hey joe, in all seriousness, what do you think of the general notion that reducing the number of children born to poorer people would reduce the demand on states and the feds in terms of funding the entitlements and education? Its an interesting delimena because on the one hand certain branches of political conservatives would presumably be repulsed by this thought based on religious grounds, while fiscal conservatives are frequently heard complaining about the demands placed on the tax coffers by Welfare mothers.

Not the first time religious conservatives run afoul of some other group of conservatives. Capital punishment and the right to life folks don't always see eye-to-eye either.

they don't use the options they already have so this will do nothing. It's a waste of money unless the plan is to ship free products directly to their door instead of making them go to the free clinic. Even then it might not work

if it worked i;d be all for paying for birth control, but the fact is in my experience the overwelming majority of pregnant teams WANTED to get pregnant for a variety of idiotic reasons (i want to move out, i want my boyfriend to care about me, etc etc etc). it's not as though these kids don't realize birth control doesn't stop pregnancies. work at a school for inner city kids and it's utterly amazing what will come out of these kids mouths.

Don't forget those who have birth control but aren't responsible enough to take it as instructed. This is just another example of how irresponsible our society has become. If we were to let people pay for their mistakes instead of offering every means of help to bail them out of their self made problems it would be a glaring example to other irresponsible men and women and may change a few bad habits.

i don't think that is accurate, where do you see the right to life people vs capital punishment group. i think you're making assumptions. i've never seen or read about that. i know there are some that don't believe it capital punishment but most conservatives are in aligned.

as for poor people having babies, i think our society has encouraged it by giving more welfare benefits to them. if you want to see a lowering birth rate, teach more about abstinence. i know it's an arcane word and is laughed by your libs. but it's 100% effective each time it's tried. you guys assume giving a condom to kids is the fix all. i know it's not going to stop every teenager to have sex because our society has ingrained to our minds that sex is great anytime. I think we've been to the point of no return for a few years now.

the whole making condoms available is a scam, unless you hire a social service person to be there when they're having sex to make sure they use a condom.

if you libs were really serious, make all males get fixed that have 2 or more kids. once they're able to make a good living, then you can reverse the procedure.

abstinence is a ludicrous argument, especially in those situations where the problem of too many kids becomes a financial burden.

i know you libs and Moderates laugh at it. it may not work now, but it could help future generations. i mean, how much will it kill our society to teach that. Is it going to just bankrupt our schools if encourage kids not to have sex until they're married and financially responsible. you guys act like it's going to cost billions to encourage kids to keep pants on.

Before I went to law school, I did a short stint as a reporter for a health care magazine in the state legislature and had a friend who worked for the Florida Catholic Conference, a lobbying arm of the Catholic Church. They were on record as pro-life and anti-capital punishment.

As to the rest of it, if sending out condoms won't do the trick for the people you are talking about, then neither will teaching abstinence. I don't see a meaningful government solution to these issues, really.

I'm about as moderate as Cheney, but happen not to give a flying crap about most social issues. This is one of them.

I understand the abstinence point, but if you think about it in the context of Pelosi's commentary about saving welfare money, it simply makes no sense. In those demographics, the abstinence lesson might as well moon shuttle trajectory data.

i think catholics are about the only conservative groups that are pro life and anti-capital punishment.

i agree no government solution will help. the church has to do a better job of teaching the consequences of sex and i think society needs to condemn it. now it's the opposite, it's almost a badge of honor to get pregnant at 15 or 16.

Sadly there are many girls in high school or younger who think that having a cute little baby will be fun. They don't have sense enough to understand the huge commitment and think mommy and daddy will be able to babysit anytime they either need or want to go do something.

Maybe a bad choice of words but some idiotic young girls see the attention that young mothers get as a positive thing.

it's not even about them getting pregnant, it's the fact that having sex is just the great thing to do and any type of abstinance is laughed and ridiculed.

the kids i know who remained virgins until marriage a) married way too quickly [usually because they didn't want to be "tempted"] and b) most are divorced [and all i know are at least unhappy]. abstinance is just a stupid idea. it doesn't work. the best way to stop teen pregnancies is to give kids hope for the future (i.e. i don't want to ruin my life by getting pregnant).

i agree, i've seen a lot of people get married too young and end up getting divorced years later.

With rare exception, the people I know who got married, for any reason or at any time in their lives, are either divorced or very unhappy.
