Penalty discussion

I thought the bench call was a terrible call. Never seen anything like that that I can remember. The whistle had already blown. Also, the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on North was very suspect. I had a friend who was a high school referee. Those guys are kind of different. They know everything about the rules but nothing about the game. It is like they are in a different world.

Sam, in another thread we've concluded that all incomplete passes that don't make the line of scrimmage is now considered grounding.

And not to be that guy but it was Peterman.

Did you conclude that an incomplete screen pass behind the line is now considered grounding? I assume you're being facetious. You are, aren't you?

... he was hit as he was throwing it.

He would rather have completed it to one of those two guys.

They call incomplete pass all the time when a QB is hit, ball goes wherever, and the debate becomes a matter of was his arm going forward for it to be a pass, or was it just a fumble. I've never ever seen that called grounding.

Was the QB in the grasp? Was he out of the box?
There are over 200 pages in the NCAA .pdf file I downloaded. The distinctions between under presure, in the grasp, eligible receiver, in the tackle box, outside the tackle box, what the tackle box is, 1neutral zone, etc. all come into play. I found the rule that appears to address the issue, but of course there are exceptions to some, other rules referenced, and a commemtary on the rules. Trying to read it all on a cell phone is hard. That and the moon phase and the line judge's daughter's time of the month apparently makes a difference as to whether the rules are enforced or not.

Bottom line, like everyone else on this site that isn't a college zebra, I'm no expert. It's been a long time since I read through a football rulebook. The subtleties between high school, college, and pro are also confusing. I can be wrong if someone can point to a rule or exception that takes precedence over what I referenced.

The main problem I have with the officials in the game were the spots they gave Gurley on the final drive. On the third down run he hits and bounces forward for two yards or more. The ball is placed two yards closer and makes the fourth down more manageable. Exact same thing happens on the fourth down run. Would it change the outcome? Don't know but it's a shame replay didn't look at it either.

what about the punt that they grabbed Cam an pulled him to the side not giving him a chance to field it. I think that was the one that landed at the 2 1/2. No interference at all?

That’s what I saw, if he had grabbed Cam after the ball had hit the ground on a fair catch, OK, but the way I saw it he grabbed Cam while the ball was still in the air. Which resulted in the fumble TD. But every game has bad calls.

OK, Now I believe my wife. She says no refs could have made so many calls and spots favoring GA if they weren't biased, ...somehow.

What's the somehow?
