J Smith has been a bust up to this point. Almost no production. Wasn't he a 5*?

If I had to compare him to anyone, it would be not be even close to J Kearse or J Clowney.

What do people not understand about this? No one is comparing the production, they are comparing build and size. It's really not that hard.

Yeah, he has kearse, clowney and j. Jones potential

I didn't say J. Smith was as good as any of those. I was saying I think he has the potential to be that type of player. He has not progressed much in two years, I don't know if that is on him or the coaches. It will be interesting to see what is done with him. In general I think there is a lot of talent on the D side that has not be used correctly.

I read. Understood. Disagreed. Imo, he has nowhere near that potential.

What does it matter if he looks like Clint Eastwood? It doesn't mean he can be the best movie cowboy of all time. It was an uneducated statement with no credence.

Jacques has an opportunity to have a monster year and make a lot of money in the NFL. However, his desire hasn't been there the last three years. I doubt that he has the passion that it takes to advance to the next level. Hope he proves me wrong.

where are you coming up with this from?

Disagree, the 3-4 requires the DBs to cover man most of the time and we have almost no SEC speed in our defensive backfield.

We had it, it was just sitting on bench. McNeil, Randolph, Gray, and Coleman have SEC level speed. Everything else...that remains to be seen.

This got me thinking, what is the fastest defense we could put on the field? I think this would be an improvement over last year:

DE - J. Smith, C. Maggit
DT - Two of: Couch, Sentimore, C. Miller
OLB - J. King, B. Brewer or C. Harris
MLB - A.J. Johnson - probably could find someone faster, but I don't think he is going to be moved.
CB - Two of: Bonner, Gray, Oliver
FS - Coleman
SS - McNeil

This thread has Mayans written all over it. I'm going to go drink and wait.

IMO Vols didn't have enough speed or pass coverage ability at LB to play 3-4 well. Sentimore is a better 4-3 player. Walls maybe better at NT than DT but on the whole 4-3 is better fit for this roster.

Just watching him play...have you seen any fire or passion?

He was a stud coming out of high school. At their summer camp, Jacques threw James Stone all over the field. But once Kiffin left, Jacques just seemed to crawl in a hole.

What are you thinking?

Walls never played NT. He has played DT in the 4-3 and DE in the 3-4. Seems to have gotten lost in the 3-4. I thought this guy would be beast.

Earlier in the thread someone asked where Jordan Williams fits. He is listed at 6-5 256. He was one of the most promising looking players, and the more time he got this year, the more he produced. Much more than J. Smith. Williams will be the next big time end. J. Smith can go be a body builder.

I think the D-line could be quite imposing depending on who returns. Couch and McCullers at DT, with Sentimore and Jordan Williams at DE as your starting line up is imposing. Mix in Walls and Miller and the other crew and you've got a pretty strong rotation. I can promise you it will be the most talent on the either line that CBJ has ever worked with. He'll be like a kid in the candy store.

Speed at LB is the biggest challenge. I think they will be much better at CB with the scheme change and a healthy Lanier.

My bad posted Walls when I meant McCullers. Agree with your logic. If Maggit gets completely healthy (he gave it all he had but couldn't run well last few games)and they play Brewer at LB it will help with speed.

This is why I wonder if Brewer will be dropped down to OLB...that was a Chavis specialty while here, to take larger DBs and make them LBs and take larger LBs and make them Des...it eventually caught up with him when we stopped signing good DTs because we started getting way too small.
