I think Gruden is a dream of many that probably won't happen. Realistically, Im hoping for either Petersen or Patterson. I would be extremely happy to get either of them in orange next year.

The reason I really like both is they have taken their respective teams to places they don't belong with sub-par talent. You rarely see those teams in top 15 (or even 25) recruiting, yet the product on the field is very good. To me, thats all coaching talent. Sure, their schedules are favorable against weak competition, but both teams have given big schools a run for their money and even beat goliaths a few times.

I get excited to think what they can do with the type of talent Tennessee can bring in.

Which one would you want?

If not Gruden I want Mora Jr or Jimbo Fisher. After those 3 I'm in for Petrino. I don't think Peterson or Paterson will leave for here.

Petersen is not leaving Boise because of his sons medical condition. Patterson is a good coach and if we miss on Gruden I'd be real happy with him.

Why people want Jimbo Fisher makes me scratch my head. He has Florida talent and still struggles in the ACC. Under achiever and we've had our fill of that.

I totally agree. I want a coach that takes average players and makes them look great, not the other way around. Fisher is a nice guy and good recruiter, but he's a bit like Mack Brown - just doesn't get it done with the talent he has.

I would be happy with either but are either more realistic than Gruden?

IMO, neither is easy to get, but both are more realistic than Gruden. Both are at small schools, making a lot less money than UT would offer, and have crappier facilities and potential than UT. Its a bigtime upgrade for both, whereas Gruden has seen bigger and better (maybe not better, because nothing is better than UT!).

I would almost throw Saban- like money at Patterson. Almost... He's a home run in my book. Wouldn't be a sexy hire but we'd turn things around a lot faster imo.

The question mark with Gruden is his inexperience in the college game. He's had success in the pro's but could he handle a bunch of 18 year olds and having to recruit in the offseason and downtime... It's just a different game. And we're talking serious $$$$ on a big unknown.

That's why I think winning at the college level carries some weight. Gruden is still my #1 choice if he's really interested in the job.

Don't get me wrong, I would take Patterson or Peterson over Jimbo but I don't know if we have the best shot at either, that being said, I would still take Jimbo over Strong or Golden so I have him 3rd on my personal list.

agreed. College and NFL are different ballgames. Success and experience in one doesn't necessarily translate to success in the other, and this has been proven many times. This is exactly why I want someone with college experience and knows how to succeed in the college game... Petersen and Patterson both fit the description.

Dont think you realize how close Gruden is to being announced. He conta ted UT and expressed interest back in the Spring. Not only realistic but its happening unless UT just decides he wants too much control. Thats the only thing that stops this. Patterson would be a real possibility but is down the list and Phas been said Peterson would leave for Oregon or Cal and thats it. But Stoops is probably number 2 and has expressed interest then Atrong behind him.

I find it funny that 2 years ago people here were saying that Chris Petersen "was a joke...he is an over rated coach...his teams play nobody...his style of coaching would never work in the SEC" and now just about every coaching thread people are now saying they want him at Tennessee.
and heck...half the people can't even spell his name right.

My opinion hasn't changed. I don't want him at UT.

I can't argue for him, I know I'll lose lol. I think at some point we have to give him a look. He's a scumbag, but he could be a cheap and effective scumbag.

He'd be a very polarizing hire to put it politely. He looks a lot better on paper but he carries some controversy with his name

Agreed. Patterson's defensive expertise would be a breath of fresh air after this season and, more importantly, is a perfect fit for the physical style of football played in the SEC. The only question would be just how well he would recruit here.
