I still think even though he is a POS off the field, his on the field accomplishments speak for themselves.

Until the last couple seasons.

which could probably be said for the vast majority of HOFers.

I don't understand why so many of you talk about how big a pos he is. it's not even relevant to the HOF. for example, hat, you're nearly unbearable on here. yet you make some valid points, are very intelligent, and contribute to the board. just b/c you're a horse's rear doesn't change any of that.

For me it's really simple. He KNEW betting on baseball much less games he managed would get him banned for life and he did so nonetheless. I say no. He knew what he was doing and did so anyway. He was a fav of mine but he knew. If ur gonna keep integrity in the game then you have to hold the players, mahager, owners etc accountable. He was a great player but he is not bigger than the game.

Actually, the criteria for the Hall of Fame specifically addresses the character and integrity of the candidate. So, you have no point.

Proven?

If anyone in power had cared to investigate, the proof is probably at least as convincing as that used to initially ban Rose. Sports Illustrated did a top notch story on it several years back.

Interesting. If proven, would current commish remove him from HOF?

No, because nobody is around to actually now step up and be a live witness and own it. I'm five Olde Styles into a rain delay at Smokies Park or I'd be able to remember the other HOFer involved in the story. I want to say Tris Speaker, but don't feel confident enough to say that for sure.

I believe the story is that Cobb and Speaker were opposing managers and fixed a game.

Dutch Leonard made the allegation but did not show up to answer questions and the Judge threw it out. Cobb and Speaker both retired. Maybe one game because Cobb had a bet on the game....

I'm sure there wasn't much of an appetite on MLB's part to pursue another game fixing scandal after the Blacksox episode a few years earlier.

One game or a whole season, it doesn't matter. That's the one thing Joe DiMaggio's self indulgent ass had right. You go all out each and every time you hit the field. There might be some guy who paid to see you and that's the only time he'll ever see you live.

This is what I think a lot of professional athletes forgot and lose focus on.
