Pete Thamel: Lincoln Riley to USC

Oh I get it..... But like we saw with USC and Kiffin, Kiffin only became a possibility after Fisher and Del Rio from NFL and Riley and Petersen from College said no...... OU is late to the market so they can't be beggars..... I think they'd be dumb AF to not try to interview Heupel. I also think Heupel would be dumb AF to turn down an interview request.
It's a no for me personally.

If the guy who unjustly fired me because blood is thicker than cerebrospinal fluid is still pulling the strings and is interim coach..... I'm out.

I wouldn't interview. I wouldn't take the call.

Interesting that since Oklahoma hired Bud Wilkinson in 1947, the only time they’ve hired a head coach with previous head coaching experience was in 1995 when they hired Schnellenberger. Everyone else was a coordinator or position coach.

I honestly don't see why USC is the one job coaches will move laterally to take. They've had one good non-cheating coach in the last 50 years. They don't pay as much as other places, especially when you consider California taxes. I guess it's a king of the ant hill mentality of being in the Pac 12.
Some people like hanging out with Will Farrel and Snoop Dogg. 70* year-round temps. Beaches.

I wouldn't live there. (Give me Tybee Island, Charleston, Jekyll Island, etc...) LA is an armpit. But some people like what it has to offer.

People won't move laterally for any Florida school. All have that in spades. Texas has a huge base, huge money, and Austin has nice weather, a California vibe if you like that, and no income tax. They can't get coaches to move laterally and they've been no more chaotic than USC since 2009.
Florida is hot and humid. It's a completely different "nice weather" than that Pacific breeze.

If true, this does make it seem like he's trying to dodge tough competition. The Pac-12 was really weak this year; probably the easiest of the P5 conferences. USC looks like the easiest "blue blood" job to exceed expectations right now.

For a coach that wants a career and not just a pay day, him going to USC is the smart move, especially in todays “win now or be fired” coaching world. It’s probably why not many seem interested in the LSU job. Why throw away a career to come to a place and be expected to win year 1 and have to face jimbo, Kiffin and mostly Saban EVERY YEAR. Oh and if you hit a bump in the road it’ll basically be the end of your job and you’ll be forced to go to some mid major or back to coordinating.

I also wonder if the number of our players, with ncaa question marks all over them, that went there didn’t bring the attention of the NCAA?

I'm ignorant but how much "juice" does Stoops still have at OU. I get history but he's not officially connected now......is he?

I don't think Heupel leaves UT because of Danny White. I think he might squeeze UT a little and see if more money pops out but I think Heupel realizes White will probably give him a lot of time and leeway and shield him if things aren't "even better" next year (because I am a Vol fan and I know how we are.)

He's done well in the NFL so far
Kliff is in the final year of his contract. His agent is using OU for more money. Kingsbury is on record multiple times saying he absolutely hates recruiting. Why trade what he has going on for 15 year old brats?

Not only that, but this is the first coaching search they've had to do in over 20 years. Unfamiliar territory for them to be sure.

It's certainly interesting to see a guy leaving a team that's usually making the playoffs. I didn't think I'd ever see that.

These guys are at a level financially where "more money" wouldn't really mean anything.

The only logical explanation is something that has been rumored, which is that LR isn't a fan of Oklahoma entering the SEC. More money probably doesn't mean much to him as you said, and it isn't like he's going to be getting all that much more money to begin with (he's already making $7.6m/year).

He's skipping out to the West Coast for a more relaxed, easier environment where he won't have to recruit against and beat Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, etc. in a few years. He's leaving for better working conditions, plus a little more money as a cherry on top (although taxes might take most of it).

That does make some sense. You have to admit that if they were in the SEC west, then they wouldn't have made all those playoff appearances. Maybe none of them. I don't know if he cares more about that or more about the recruiting environment and lifestyle stuff. i would think living in LA, even as an ultra-rich person, would be very inconvenient and frustrating. It even killed Kobe Bryant. He was just trying to bypass a little traffic.

Expectations, I guess, can be gauged by Clay Helton fired in September at 46/24 overall record, 1 conference title and two additional divisions.

I hope Oregon and Utah welcome him correctly.

It will be interesting, wonder who he'll hire for the defensive side of the ball. Not a great defense at Oklahoma recently. ASU, Utah and UCLA will get the opportunity to introduce him to the PAC-12 South. I'm most interested in seeing how he stacks up against a physical Utah team. Of course we get a second shot at Utah this weekend.
