I think I remember that in 1997 Terry Fair's stats compared favorably to Woodson's.

No doubt that Woodson won the Heisman that year because he had a couple of good games on ABC.

What I remember was that Georgia's Champ Bailey had much better stats that season and he played both sides of the ball too.

You're right - Terry Fair's PUNT RETURN stats were comparable, but Champ Bailey was the one with better overall numbers. I can remember games where Champ Bailey played 85 snaps combined on both sides of the ball. It's a wonder Jim Donnan didn't get him killed.

Bailey had better stats then Heisman Winner Woodsen the year before.

What an over-rated joke, Woodsen

if i remember right, at the beginning of the 97 season, everybody sadi the the hypesman was peyton's to lose....and even with the loss to florida, he was still the guy to beat....but then espn started mounting this campaign for woodson, just to have someone to compete with peyton, and it just snowballed. the voters started thinking that maybe they should give it to a defensive guy for a change, and so you have the biggest travesty to ever happen in college football. i no longer care anything about the hypesman, cause that's all it is, a bunch of hype.

Notice that they don't talk about the heisman too much on sportscenter or gameday until very late in the year now.... and still with not as much endorsing as they did in 1997. I think the accusations that they were affecting sports more than reporting on it sunk in some. Its no mystery they wanted to hype the heisman race for marketing purposes... the presentation is shown on ESPN.

The finalists this year are all soilid.

Reggie Bush
Matt Leinart
Adrian Peterson
Alex Smith
Jason White

Did anybody watch the regular awards presentation? All the praise was going to Oklahoma, Miami, Michigan and flippin' Georgia. It even felt like they weren't giving USC much respect... Only what they had to because the team was playing in the MNC. But if you watched without knowledge of the regular season, you'd figure Miami and Georgia were in BCS bowls.

can someone please tell me why alex smith is not running away with this award? his stats are out of this world!

SEASON RECORD CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA TD INT SACK RAT
2004 11-0 185 280 2624 66.1 9.4 28 4 16 174.9
ATT YDS AVG TD
120 563 4.7 10

174.9 season rating...11-0 record....38 TOTAL TD's and only 4 INT's.....and in the big games he came up huge....as opposed to white or even leinhart....it's not even close in my book

He doesn't even show up on this list and he's only in fifth place on this list.

His biggest problem is that his stats came against Mtn West Conf. competition. Some of the voters still have a bad taste in their mouths after BYU's Ty Detmer threw something like 3 interceptions against Hawaii the same day he received the Heisman trophy. Detmer did not repeat as Heisman winner the next year.

Jason White won't repeat either because he did so poorly in the last 2 games last year after winning the Heisman.

I would guess Leinart will win, because he's got the stats, he's a quarterback, and his team in # 1 in the rankings.

It kills the media to see him be the best. There is a jealously thing with him( they think he is rich, spoiled and from privelidge)He is from the south, another LARGE reason he didn't win the Heistman. How can ANY other player be mentioned for MVP this year? Last year he split the award with a guy for whom he beat TWICE, passed for more yards, more TD's, higher percentage, and his team won the division over the guy he split with, and also won TWO playoff games... There is a clear and natural biased against him. Always has been, Always will be. Even Marino spouted reasons the record would fall, rules changes etc, in today's paper and claimed Favre and Culpepper would do the same if they had Peytons recievers. Hey Dan- :finger: , Go Peyton, Go Colts!!!

All Danny Boy has is his records and (meaningless) Pro-Bowls.
He has no Super Bowl ring.
Peyton will soon own all of his records,
and God willing, a Super Bowl ring as well.

The Colts will probably not win it this year. New England and Pittsburgh are both too fundamentally sound on defense to give up points like most other teams in the NFL, not to mention their offenses could score all over the Colts.

Peyton is THE offensive player of the NFL this year, but to be fair, he probably does two of the top five recievers in the league on his team.

I heard one guy on ESPN say that McNabb or Owens were the MVP of the league. I think that's funny because Manning had to throw 5 TD's in 3 or 4 games for them to win. He's carrying the Colts on his back. I disagree milo, Reggie Wayne isn't on my top 5 receivers list.

Yep, it was a 7 year contract for $98 million with $34 million dollar signing bonus. How is much is Charles Woodson getting paid?

James is a RB. He's a good out of the backfield, but generally doesn't contribute as much to the passing game as he did in his first few years. His WR's are Stokley, Harrison, and Wayne, TE's are Clark and Pollard. :D

Here's something to think about regarding the Colts receivers. They've basically had one great receiver and a few good receivers. However, is it the receivers that make the quarterback or the quarterback that makes the receivers? Where would Marvin Harrison be without Peyton Manning as his quarterback??

Marvin Harrison played 2 seasons prior to Manning's arrival. Counting Manning's rookie season.... Harrison's stats looked like this....

16 gp 64 rec... 836 yds, 8 tds
16 gp 73 rec... 866 yds, 6 tds
12 gp 59 rec... 776 yds, 7 tds

But, since 1999, Harrison has not had a season with less than 94 receptions, less than 1272 yards, and less than 10 tds. The 94 receptions was last season as more teams doubled up on Harrison.... however, that frees up the other receivers who Manning has been passing to liberally recently.

In all of Manning's seasons, he has not had less than 26 tds and 3739 yards. He also will have 6 straight 4000-yard seasons.

Amazing what happens to your career as a receiver when you go from Jim Harbaugh to Peyton Manning.
