Majors was a very good player at UT. He won an NC at another school and had a not so good record at UT. And, he bled whiskey, not orange. So, your point?

After the first 6 years of rebuilding, Majors was 81-30-7 in his last 10 years. I don't consider that to be that bad., considering what he walked into.

He had some really good wins that many still remember. He had a lot more rebuilding time than anyone would allow these days. His overall lifetime coaching record isn't very good. I absolutely loved the Sugar Bowl win and the Notre Dame come back win.

You are correct about his lifetime coaching record, but he did take over an Iowa St program that had won only 4 games in the prior 2 seasons, and became Big 8 Coach of the year. He took over a Pitt team that was 3-9 the previous year and won a Natl Championship, and then turned around a Tennessee team that went 6-5 the previous year.

Also, when he went back to Pitt when it had fallen back to 3-9. He wasn't able to do much the second time there. His overall record suffered because of taking on 4rebuilding jobs. He may not be the best ever coach, but considering what he accomplished from where he started with each program, he was pretty successful.

Johnny has us rolling pretty good before his heart problems in 92. In Majors last three full seasons we won 29 or 30 games and when he was forced out Fulmer inherited a roster full of very good to great college players.
