Sunday is the 100th anniversary of the 500. The fact that I can call it "The 500", and all of you know what I am referring to says most of what needs to be said about the Indianapolis 500. Love open wheel racing or not, you want to know who won this race, and most likely will watch it.

The point of this thread is to pick your favorites, let's say the top 5, no contest per se, but just for fun. Points start at 33 for first to one for 33rd place. Here is the line-up. Better have tie breakers, 1st is pick race winner, 2nd is most picks in top 3, 3rd is most picks in top 5, 4th is highest finish of any pick, 5th is highest finish of 5th place pick. If still tied, then they both deserve to be co-winners.

I've been catching up on old 500s on the DVR. They've been on ESPN Classic all week.

A couple of things really stand out:

1. The speed they carried into and on pit road. And with crews out working on the cars. They have to enter pit road at almost 200 mph.

2. How long pit stops take.

Agreed, noticed the same. The difference in pit stop time is mainly refueling speed.

They've cut almost 12 seconds off the refueling time in 20 years. That's incredible.

And the crew members just lolly gag on the tires and are still done by the time the fuel is in the car.

And Little Al doing all that weaving at the end the 92 race would have gotten him a black flag today.

Yes, however, I believe there is less fuel capacity today, so that accounts for some of the time.

I would shed a tear if Carpenter won. Would be amazing.

Would be massively popular. I never cared about Ed until he joined SFR. I think that would be the biggest story. SFR giant killing at the 500 would be something amazing.

Good point. I wonder what the difference in the tank size is.

Today the max is 22 gal., I'm not sure what it was just before 22, but back when they first went to methanol, it was something like 40-45 gal. I'm fairly certain it was somewhere between at one point.
