With pretty much all up and coming coaches out of the picture and no Gruden in sight... which coach of the 3 with checkered pasts is the best fit?

I would go with (in this order) Tressel, Petrino, Davis.

Davis I'm not impressed with I feel like it could be a Kiffin 2.0 experience with us running him out of town after a few .500 seasons.

Tressel would be a big hit the first season with the sanctions and maybe show some desperation but I think he would make us forget that in the long run. It wouldn't look great PR wise but then we have 6 months to forget about all that til kickoff. He would be a solid hire but may be too much like Bruce Pearl for the University/Hart.

Petrino while maybe a good coach is a clown. The whole motorcycle incident shows his intelligence. That with the whole Atlanta Falcons deal shows his character. I'd be afraid this guy really could screw things up and leave us both in shambles and a laughing stock.

Tressel all day. He has won at every level. Just put in his contract NO SWEATER VESTS.

Terrible look

I would select Tressel of the given options. Probably would only have to deal with a sweater vest in November coaching in Tennessee.

Would not support any of those hires. Guys who have been fired at one big school, rarely win big whern given a second chance.

Butch Jones would be preferable to any of the retreads, and even he isn't a great choice.

Hart started off his search with second tier coaches and I won't support him going even lower due to incompetence. Arkansas was able to hire a big name, proven winner. If Hart can't do the same, he needs to be shown the door.

those that want tressel, petrino, or davis must have voted for obama. same level of stupidity.

Clearly Davis. If it comes to someone of questionable ethics, I'd take Petrino. We are in it with the NCAA which is where Tressel's issues lie. What makes anyone think a Big 10 coach can beat an SEC team? Thats the only thing more rare than TN beating an SEC team.

I would fully support ANY of the 3 you mentioned...Davis makes the most sense but Tressel is probably the best coach...Petrino is the desperation hire.

Once I actually spent some time an looked into Petrino, I think he should have been the first on the list...even above Jon Gruden and especially Gundy & Strong. Nevermind the whole "motorcycle" incident. People still love Bill Clinton and he was doing much worse given his situation. Petrino has a college record of 75-26 (better than all the coaches mentioned). Some might mention recruiting, but we can sign all the Top 20 classes we want, doesnt change the fact that we have still sucked beyond belief. At some point the recruits will figure out that players that have came here have rarely progressed and never lived up to the full potential. Besides, I just have a gut feeling that this fanbase and Petrino would get along just fine.

I say we offer Petrino and just be done with this. Everybody makes mistakes, and he would probably be on his best behavior and the least coach of anybody to do something stupid now.

None of the above. We are already under a magnifying glass with the NCAA. Hiring someone on their list of "problem" coaches is just going to have them permanently residing in our athletic department until they find something.

Butch Davis should've done been hired.

I know i am not sure what they are waiting on...We coveted him when We fired Fulmer and he turned us down to stay at UNC and then We hired Kiffin...Now is the time to steal him at a good price!

And recruiting would take off immediately.

Petrino: Tennessee would lose a lot of people in the stands at first. If they were winning, I am sure some would come, but a lot of supporters would never ever come back. That is just the facts in East Tennessee.

Tressel: If the NCAA is OK with it, I am OK with it. However, I don't think they would be OK with it. We are not in a position to be going against their will.

Davis: I felt like NC was headed straight for probation when he was there. I do not know why we would want him when we are already on probation. That would be asking for trouble. No thanks. I would take Maryville's coach before I would go this route.
