Technically this is true, but for the purposes of this discussion I would consider accompanying your parents to the grocery store to purchase various fruits, one of which being watermelon, basically the same as doing it for themselves, thus they would have enough life experience to understand the mathematical word problem.

I'm familiar with either this test or a similar one from several years ago.

The fact remains that back then and today, it wasn't necessarily the best judgement to give this test.

I 100% agree that it was probably not the best idea. I also agree that questions that have to do with subjects the students find interesting/enjoyable/funny will get them to focus on the work. May it have been a better idea to have word problems focused on Harry Potter or Twilight or whatever kids care about these days? Definitely. But the kids probably felt less like it was work because they were written to be some level of entertainment.
