We all have seen coaches "holding their players accountable" and some do some "Throwing some players under the bus", but Pitino just took the cake. Trashing his players, his team and being pretty much a jerk about St. Johns.

I remember back in 2001 when we fired Green and Pitino had t taken the U of L job yet, I was convinced we had a shot at him. Even back then, there were airport rumors, long before Grumors. It’s funny how those rumors have always been basically the same, with just different names.

I wouldn't want Pitino anywhere near our program

A bit harsh, Dave. With all the botox and skin tightening plus the hair dyes, you gotta expect some changes upstairs.

Nothing Rick said was any more scandalous than what Dennis Gates said about his players after MO lost to TN:

"The big picture of it all was our inability -- we gotta do a better job of drawing fouls," said Gates. "I think we suck at it. We're f---ing terrible. We're terrible at drawing fouls. And we gotta do a better job."

Barnes pressers in his early years here, when he was building his team and culture, weren't much different than this. Barnes would outright call out deficiencies in his players by name and their effort. It resulted in him getting mentally tough players who wanted to be held to a higher standard of accountability.

Now the culture is set, so it is less needed. But at one time it was very much like this game in and game out. I also do remember many questioning Barne's style, especially those first few years when the results were hard to come by. Only for a few seasons later the same outlets were begging for Barnes to stay and offering him a lifetime of free stuff in Knoxville when he was contemplating the UCLA job.

The truth is that he’d have good success here. Just being real. Maybe better than what he did at Kentucky. They spend tons on their basketball program, more than their football team. We spend much more on our football team, but we still come close to what they spend for basketball. What a poverty program, Kentucky is. That’s my only point. 😂

There's a lot to be said of Pitinos moral compass(or lack there of),but he's not in the wrong about this. This is what a coach does. Challenge his players to be better.

Let’s actually make it to the elite 8 with a top 5 team before we crack jokes about me. As far as stats go, we still haven’t won anything that history cares about.
No doubt pitino is a much more accomplished coach than Barnes… but we’re talking about two sure fire hall of famers.
