After all the speculation that several of our commits may get boosts in their rankings and possibly even a star bump, the exact opposite happened. Notable exceptions include:

Kerbyson: 49 OT up to 39 OT
Parker: 2* up to 3*
Saulsberry: NR to 3*

However, almost everyone dropped.

Posey: 43 down to 47
Martin: 14 down to 16
Downs: 26 down to 28
Randolph: 41 down to 46
Smith: 43 down to 44
Crowder: 13 or 11 can't remember down to 14
Coleman: 21 down to 26

I guess its just other guys showing out over the summer and jumping our guys, forcing them down. Kind of odd that the majority of our guys did nothing over the summer to improve their stock and instead actually dropped. Must be the conspiracy theory (sarcasm). Joking aside its amazing that this happened to so many of our commits.

WTH? Are they all just lazy? These guys better start doing some outdoor training.

Not really that surprising. There are a ton of players that hadn't been evaluated the last time the rankings came out (Saulsberry for example). So as the entire field gets evaluated, there are going to be some that come in and bump previously-ranked players down.

What most people have said on here is that guys like Smith and Randolph will surprise people with their play in their senior seasons. It's not that they were ranked too low the first time and were just waiting on a new release for a more accurate ranking (as was the case with Kerbyson), it's that we expect their on-field performance this fall to earn them a big jump toward the end of the senior season.

I still think several of our guys will jump before the final NSD rankings

:banghead2:So what does that mean....do they run slower, are they weaker, are they smaller, have they lost their ball skills? Who does this evaluation and ranking, and if the stars go up does that make them better players...do they get bigger, stronger, faster. Does coaches evaluating players at camps and watching them play and watching film not count as much as rivals or scouts stars? These people make money and have a great racket going....they couldn't evaluate all the players in the country...they gotta be using a lot of word of mouth and hype. These players develop and grow and mature and the coaches get a much better idea of how that is going to happen with these recruits. Don't sweat the stars.

It's not as if they dropped 20 spots. Everyone you mentioned only fell one spot or two.

Bit of an over reaction for mid-August. Feb. Is a long time away girls.

I personally wouldn't look into this too much, but its kind of frustrating to see our commits dropping like that. I just hope its true that these coaches really do evaluate the players themselves and they do it well. I have faith.

My comments have nothing to do with freaking out or worrying what Rivals thinks. I was simply pointing out what seemed to be a fairly odd scenario...half of our class dropping. In no way am I questioning their skills or the staff's ability to evaluate. People on this board are so damn quick to jump others, that they read a post and presume that the OP is putting this on the staff and its a "sky is falling" thread. I was intending to get other's thoughts on why it happened and what they thought...not smart ass remarks like "they should train outdoors and stop being lazy".

How bout this. Tenn has no 2-star or unranked players now (except for the JUCO kid and JUCO rankings aren't out yet)

IMO, this class has top to bottom quality players which should equate to depth in the future.

I am so sick of people obsessing over the Rivals rankings. Sometimes I feel like these ratings services have no idea. Chris Donald and Brett Vinson were 5*s while Colt McCoy & Sam Bradford were 3*s (I believe). A few of the players moving up or down is essentially meaningless in my opinion.

We desperately need football season to start so we have something to talk about besides these hack-job recruiting services.

Some of the rankings are a bit suspect with Rivals this year. I believe they alluded in an article to 2011 as being a bit down in overall talent. Thus, fewer 5* recruits.

On the flip side, they have conceded that some recruits may be underrated due to various reasons (e.g., lack of film). With an important analyst for a key area gone to ESPN, it is not helping their cause. So is it really a down year for recruits?

Another issue is what appears to be a resistance to acknowledge that initial evaluations could be wrong. For example, Ethan Hutson was the #1 ranked Center. I believe every major program in the SE evaluated him and passed. However, Rivals simply lowered him to #2 while UA, UF, UT, AU, etc. went after other recruits. A few do get bumped up, but fewer seem to take the plunge you might expect in such a scenario.

Further, someone from Rivals responded to an emailed question from a poster on TOS regarding the impact of offers. Apparently their response was that offers were not taken into consideration. Seems odd to me. I'd like to think that, if I was in their shoes, I'd be a bit more mindful when Saban, Meyer, Dooley, Kiffin, etc. all offer a recruit. My first thought would be maybe something is being overlooked.

Exactly, that the fact that they would say that offer lists would not affect their rankings makes one have to really look at WTF these guys are doing. they give a ranking and don't want to back down off what they say.

Another thing is that even if they go off raw talent the star system will never work universally. SCHEME is a big deal to how good a player is in that system. You could have the best athlete in the world but if his traits don't match a scheme he isn't going to work out there. For example Joe Haden who a lot of players knocked in the combine for his lack of speed.. would not be high on a teams board if they played mainly man to man but in a cover 2 scheme with safeties over the top it's a different story if he has great read skills and is a good tackler.

They also don't seem to take into consideration whats in these kids heads. I'd take a smart guy that runs a 4.5 over a moron that runs a 4.3 at say running back but at wr i'd take the dumb 4.3 guy. If I am recruiting an offensive skill position player i'd shy away from the overly brash guys more whereas on defense or the line I might be more inclined to take a chance on a headcase (because certain positions are suited for headcases)

But, what I had heard is that they were going to surprise people their Sr years b/c they were showing UP at camps. Kerbyson at FNL, for example. Or was that Juda Parker? I can't remember, but there was all this talk of them being ballers at camps & UNDERrated. I'm curious what all that noise was about. & that was by reputable posters as well!

all this means is that we cant hold this class to a standard... its not going to be great. not alot of elite kids want to come to a program that is down. guys our roster is that of a team that has been on probation. let this staff get a base going. we have young talent in the skilled positions... now we need a base and then get some good Defensive players and we wil be ok. i think the o is going to be alot better than people think. we just need to rebuild the dline and that can be done in 2 classes. so far this staff has done NOTHING to rebuild the dline. if i was them i would be going balls to the wall for some dline...

Rivals rankings mean less this year than any other year. I'm sure some players that get more exposure are going to move up more. Some of the evaluators at Rivals have said they don't even look at a player's offer list when rating. Kind of stupid IMO to not even look at what coaches (who happen to get paid millions to evaluate) think of these kids.

Wouldn't all this imply that (probably per offer lists) a few players were simply bumped above them because their stock is soaring? It doesn't necessarily mean that they evaluated them and pushed them down on purpose.

More along the lines of adding a row in Excel. :)

I told everyone for months this would likely happen. The guys that typically jump from the first rankings to the updated ones are guys who were never evaluated previously. Tennessee's commits were all evaulated the first go round and none of them blew up over the summer.
