Player Rankings Drop

Personally, It seems rediculous to take these star rankings too seriously. There are just way too many variables to account for in each recruit for it to ever approach an exact science. Stars are good for getting a general impression of overall ability/potential, but it is VERY general. Some things to consider about ratings:

1. Politics and hype created by coaches and handlers.
2. The relatively small number of talent evaluators for such a large pool of players.
3. The lack of adequate film and exposure of a large percentage of players.
4. The inability of talent evalutors to accurately judge a players true ability to even get into school and fulfill his obligations as a student and team member for 3-5 years at a major university.
5. The often very different opinions from one rating service to another.
6. The annual bump up for players who wait til the end to verbal, as services like to built interest and intrigue, for obvious reasons.

And I think each year it is getting more difficult to rate these kids. This year especially. But having said that, it's always nice to one or two kids in your class with 5 stars, even though its no guaranty of success. Bottom line is rating services are businesses trying to cash in on the booming collegiate football industry. Nothing wrong with that but take it all with a grain of salt.

This is why I look at the offer list instead of the star rating. Most accurate indicator of how good a player they will be is usually their offer list.

Oh, no. All of our players just got worse! What are we to do?

It amazes me the lack of comprehension that so many on this board seem to have. This thread topic had nothing to do with our players becoming worse over night or me questioning why we offered/accepted them. I was simply pointing out that so many on here thought that a handful of our guys would be bumped to 4* status, yet the exact opposite happened. Simply found it odd.

Yes, because a lack of comprehension is clearly what is lacking in my response.

Stop obsessing over stars. How's your comprehension of that one?

The stars are an indication of ability to contribute immediately. (Assumed @ a standard BCS level) They are not a 1-5 talent scale.

You're clearly lacking comprehension when I spell it out for you that I'm NOT worried about stars. I don't give a damn if we have the #19 ranked CB or #27. Instead, I was articulating a phenomenon (ranking drop) that was different than that what OTHERS had expected.

Yes. You are so unworried about star rankings that you felt the need to bring a drop to the attention of the rest of the board. A wolf in sheep's clothing will still eat sheep.
Your non-interest in the star system is astounding. I cannot believe you are so above star rankings that you paid enough attention to be able to point out a drop.

I'm uninterested in sex too, I suppose.

You obviously know what I was thinking better than I do, as well as my intentions in starting this thread. Therefore, I'm just going to surrender to you, because you've exposed me as a fraud. I'm a diehard star worshiper. Nothing else about a prospect means anything to me, except the gold next to their name. Sorry Volnation but I've been lying about not worrying about stars, however Sab has caught me in my lie.

I understand your intentions fully and I think you brought up a good point.

Everyone on here assumed every Tennessee recruit that was a 3* was simply totally underated and under the radar. In reality, they weren't at all. The only guy I could make an argument for being a 4* is Kerbyson. Other than that all the other guys are rated exactly as they should be.

I said over and over it was just as likely players would drop as jump because typically the guys that jump in the ratings were those that were never evaluated or had dominate summers. That proved to be the case with Saulsberry and the DE from Hawaii jumping a little bit. The rest dropping was no surprise IMO. None had dominate summers at camps or combines.

Not true. There are plenty of 4* players in every class who aren't close to being ready to play, especially linemen.

Just look at James and Stone. Both were 4* but one will more than likely be starting against UTM, while the other is very raw.
Isn't the star system actually grading the player's untapped potential, in their opinion?

does it really matter if you drop from 22 to 27 or rise from 27 to 22. the difference is so small and it is just a few people's opinions about players from across the country, it is almost impossible to rank the difference from number 12 to number 16

What exactly is the difference between a 5.6 and a 5.7 player on rivals ratings? Or is it just their team bias rankings.
