Personally, It seems rediculous to take these star rankings too seriously. There are just way too many variables to account for in each recruit for it to ever approach an exact science. Stars are good for getting a general impression of overall ability/potential, but it is VERY general. Some things to consider about ratings:
1. Politics and hype created by coaches and handlers.
2. The relatively small number of talent evaluators for such a large pool of players.
3. The lack of adequate film and exposure of a large percentage of players.
4. The inability of talent evalutors to accurately judge a players true ability to even get into school and fulfill his obligations as a student and team member for 3-5 years at a major university.
5. The often very different opinions from one rating service to another.
6. The annual bump up for players who wait til the end to verbal, as services like to built interest and intrigue, for obvious reasons.
And I think each year it is getting more difficult to rate these kids. This year especially. But having said that, it's always nice to one or two kids in your class with 5 stars, even though its no guaranty of success. Bottom line is rating services are businesses trying to cash in on the booming collegiate football industry. Nothing wrong with that but take it all with a grain of salt.
