Playoff ratings drop

Too much tradition with the Granddaddy of bowl games for them to move it from New Years Day.

Self-proclaimed tradition. The majority of fans don't care about its "tradition" nearly as much as they think, and that apathy is just going to continue to grow.

The only time the majority will care about it is when it's a playoff game.

True but the Sugar Bowl's contract was made by the SEC and B12 pretty much because of the Rose Bowl's contract.

Yes but "we're doing something that's causing a problem because they're doing something that's causing the same problem" unfortunately still just means both are causing the problem.

If the Sugar wanted to do something about it and dropped the Jan 1st requirement, that'd be different. That might also even make it so that some pressure could be put pressure on the Rose to do so, also.

The Sugar only wrote their requirement because the Rose had made it clear that they weren't dropping theirs. The Rose already screwed the whole thing up, so the Sugar figured they'd go ahead and maximize their ratings.

This. As I said, blame the Rose Bowl.

These games should be on a Saturday, no matter the date. The CFB championship needs to be the last Saturday before the NFL playoffs start. You should never decrease your audience by having championship level games on a work day. People on the east coast are up late and have to work the next day and those on the west coast are either still at work or sitting in traffic when the game starts. It's stupid business and I hope the playoff committee get their heads out of their a$$es and changes this

Wait....all anyone that wanted a playoff said was how the rating would go thru the roof and the schools would make a killing. Now its just a bunch of excuses.

Or maybe they were just plain wrong and it wont generate more interest.

That must be why Bama's game got higher ratings.

Oh championship ratings sent down because of Bamas involvement. Its getting borng to people. And wow. Maybe some of the bandwagoners have gotten bored too, more Clemson fans at the game. Interesting.

We have a blind squirrel finding a nut: you're actually right about something. The casual college football viewer has Bama fatigue. It has become boring.

But while it is Bama in particular, I think it's also the Southeast in general. Heading into Monday's game, 8 of the previous 9 national champs were from the Southeast (Florida x2, LSU, Bama x3, Auburn, Florida St). And of course, we were guaranteed to have another no matter who won this year. The rest of the country, understandably, said "to heck with it."

And wow. Maybe some of the bandwagoners have gotten bored too, more Clemson fans at the game. Interesting.

The blind squirrel missed the nut this time. Bama fans have had to pay for a lot of travel lately. Clemson fans haven't had the opportunity to make a trip to a national title game in 34 years. It is not surprising in the least that Clemson had more fans in AZ. That the split wasn't more in Clemson's favor is the only surprising part.

While the ratings dropped from last year, Monday's game was the third most-watched broadcast in the history of ESPN.

Agree but that's not what the pundits were saying. All I heard from pro playoff folks was "how excited people will be to watch a playoff game". In its second year it didnt happen. As reported, both games were down "significantly". Not a little. Significantly.

And in the end it was still #1 v #2. Just like the BCS

You're leaving out a key detail; if you don't think both being on New Year's Eve hurt them big time, then you're kidding yourself. Also not sure what pointing out it ended up being #1 vs. #2 has to do with anything. Did you think it would never happen under a playoff.

Also, pretty sure the schools still "made a killing".

No, what you leave out is this playoff game was touted as what everyone wanted. Ok, you got what everyone wanted then less people watched. It doesnt matter what day is was shown or what teams played. Its what everyone wanted then people didnt watch. Dont kid yourself. What everyone predicted didnt happen.

What do you mean "people didn't watch"? It was down from last year, but last year was the most-watched event in ESPN history. So far, the four highest-rated cable broadcasts in history are last year's three playoff games and this year's championship. More people watched this year's final than watched any BCSNCG on cable. And Clemson-Bama had the most legal streams in history. Plenty of people watched.

Uh no....YOU don't kid yourself. GTFO if you actually believe the time and date didn't matter. That's just stupid and you know it.

What's really funny is you can blame one of those glorious bowl games you apparently think are superior for the reason they were forced to play on NYE.

But obviously having the games on NYE, one kicking off at 3:00 PM CT when many are still working, has no effect on ratings in this guy's world.
