I'm incredibly concerned that Tennessee is going to follow the pattern of most Barnes teams. Start off strong, win with defense, score upsets along the way, but get worn down over the season and come into March so burned out that they can't grind much further - and once they run into a team that maybe isn't as good defensively but can score consistently and has a good shooting night, that's it.
I lived in Texas during part of the Barnes era, and the criticisms made then are eeriely similar to the ones we see now. A lot of decent-to-good regular season Longhorn teams would come into the tournament looking tired, worn down, and hesitant to shoot. Year after year. Even when they had great shooters, they'd get to March and guys either didn't want to shoot or were missing shots. The rap was that Barnes wore his teams out over the course of the season, mentally and physically, and they'd run out of gas at the end, often ahead of their seeding.
Now don't misunderstand me here. I picked Final Four - and anything can happen once you get to the Final Four. I hope that it's all been circumstantial, and it's not a pattern. I want this to be the year. For every Tennessee fan who's followed, for the players who've carried the program, and Barnes for having eleveated the program to national prominence. Maybe they have enough guys, enough depth, a deep enough roster, that they'll have enough this year. I sure hope they do. I'm just nervous that the pattern will continue.
