'Porn Tax

You can't make this up. Is porn really the cause of high divorce rates? Really?

This is the kind of stuff Santorum would support, though.

Carr claims his proposal is about more than just money. He said his real concern is about saving marriages. He said that Tennessee has one of the highest divorce rates and he's hoping his proposal will change that.

According to the bill he filed, the adult entertainment industry generates nearly 270-million dollars in Tennessee. A 25 % sales tax would be applied to adult movies, books or admission to any adult entertainment venue. It would also apply to escort services and cabarets. Carr feels this is a tax that will keep giving back to the people of Tennessee.

Some people feel Representative Carr's proposal may violate the first amendment.

That would be an interesting argument to make. I'm not sure if I actually agree with this idea or not, but I would listen to their argument.

Taxing some forms of expression and not others is not a content neutral regulation and hence violates the 1st amendment.

It would be like taxing books at 5% and taxing Korans/Bibles/etc at 20%.

Penn & Teller's show demonstrated some stats showing high correlation between the availability of pornography and drops in sexual crimes.

Let's make it less accessible.

Meh, I can't really buy that argument too much. I hate taxes as much as the next guy, but I think that may be a pretty weak argument for 1st Amendment violation.

If he really thinks porn is destroying marriage, why not propose banning it? :ermm:

After he said it wasn't about raising money but saving marriages we all should have stopped reading right there.

Would love to get what his definition of "pornography" is. I want to say the supreme court tried to define once and could never do it, but not sure.

I like how the women are up in arms about this...

By the way, can anyone tell me how an ultra Catholic is so popular down south? When I lived down there, the evangelicals whipped up on catholics routinely in their sermons. What gives?
