When you were 20 years old, you had a deal for $200-250,000 and someone offeredAbs you more than double that amount you would have turned it down without even asking the original team to up their offer?
Absolutely! My parents would have beaten my ass if I had backed out of a deal. We had money,( and yes, much more than 250,000) that was never an issue. I was raised to keep your world and never break deals. Obviously kids these days don't follow that, but it's just as much the parents fault for letting them act like idiots. Not all are like that, but you get the picture.

Obviously not high 7 figure's, but I've definitely turned down 60-80k raises for another company, simply because I was happy where I was. There's ZERO loyalty these days.

You think maybe someone who didn’t grow up for money and had to scratch and claw may have a different mindset? You could afford to turn down money because you grew up financially secure.

I have no clue how Gibson grew up. I’m just not willing to sit in my high horse and throw someone all the way under the bus without knowing all of the circumstances.

you are making an assumption on what the deal actually is, and what they would have been giving their word to. you assume Gibson had agreed to X number to play the full 2025 season. but we have no clue what was actually agreed to and the language that is used.

and I think there is another angle people need to look at. Gibson could be seeing his situation as changed for the worse and want more money accordingly. He went from #2 on the team, with an AA #1 paired up across from him taking the top challenge.

I think anyone would ask for pay increase if they suddenly got more responsibilities at work thru no fault of his own. Its not a keeping his word issue, its dealing with reality issue.

like you agree to pay at a company where you are teamed up with another guy who is more experienced, and qualified to work on a project. but then that more experienced and qualified guy is suddenly not on the project, leaving you there at the top spot, that is clearly more responsibility. more is being asked of him than there was before the injury. its not just greed here.

Lol this stuff would’ve been happening if money like this + ability to transfer was ever a part of the sport in the past.

It’s not a “these days” issue. It’s a money issue.

Correct, some individuals act like the players from 30 years ago wouldn't do the same thing this ers is doing..milking the NIL for every dime they can get...

That wasn't what was said. It was said NOBODY would turn it down and that's simply not true. He's from Trussville,Al he absolutely did NOT grow up poor. That's not a cheap place to live. My nephews played with him at Trussville. He wasn't poor and he was a huge doucher. But I can't personally speak on his character, but definitely haven't heard good things.

Incorrect.. It's a combination of both. Money is absolutely part of the issu, If it was the only issue, EVERY player would be doing it.

Some definitely would, but I guarantee you a higher amount these days would do it. There's NO debate in that, end of conversation!

I don’t understand this idea of loyalty to an employer, especially a multi million$ corporate type employer. They aren’t your friends or family, just giving you money to perform a job which in turn they sell your labors to others for a profit. Large companies rarely show loyalty to their employees anymore, cutting jobs and benefits whenever it pleases them. When UT tells an athlete they should look around for another program nobody seems to care because it doesn’t negatively impact the team we cheer for.

Mods please move this discussion to off topic thread as it has nothing to do with recruiting nor the portal. TIA

Spyre and Tennessee equal two different entities. I get the point you’re trying to make but this isn’t exactly the same. An athlete can still earn their negotiated contract for NIL rights even if they’re not playing for Tennessee anymore I believe. Athletes have way more benefits and leverage than the average company does vs employees.

Players were completely screwed for years by the NCAA though.

I don’t think anyone is paying athletes who aren’t going to the agreed upon school. I know that “technically” NIL isn’t pay for play but we all know it is

Usually bc they sign another NIL which voids the one they were in OR transfer to a location where they can’t fulfill their contract.
