With recent news that Vandy OT Tyler Steen was on campus Tuesday, thought it would be good to get an updated list of legit Vol portal targets:

DB Wesley Walker (GT)- on campus 3/4-5 ***COMMITTED TO VOLS***
OT Tyler Steen (Vandy) - UV to Tennessee 3/1; OV set for Bama March 26-28
LB Lorenzo McCaskill (ULL)
WR Bru McCoy (USC)
DE Mitchell Agude (UCLA) - OV to Washington this weekend
CB Quincy Riley (MTSU) - OV to Louisville this weekend

Why bother. We got a "self imposed cap" or some other BS excuse. TN is off the market.

Well folks, we're ranked #92 overall in the transfer portal. So, is that because we don't have room or because we simply can't compete with the 91 teams ahead of us. Mhmmm.

@BigOrangeTrain is just butthurt from being pwned 24/7.

Do you seriously not know the answer after this has been discussed over and over?

Find it yourself. It’s been talked about ad nauseam on VQ, Swain, this message board, etc.

OK.

I google "Tennessee Self imposed scholarship reductions that expire after Spring semester".

From 02/22/22 Knoxville Sentinel article:

Is Tennessee still self-imposing scholarship cuts?

UT played last season with as few as 71 scholarship players, as players entered the transfer portal throughout the fall...

Are the Vols also cutting scholarships from the 2022 roster as an extension of that self-imposed penalty? UT Chancellor Donde Plowman, athletics director Danny White and Heupel declined to answer, citing the open NCAA investigation as the reason for their silence...

In the transfer portal, UT picked up only one scholarship player while the other 13 SEC teams have added an average of almost six players apiece.

The Vols could add a few more transfers in the spring when traffic in the portal is expected to spike again. But that may depend on whether more UT players enter the portal after spring practice to free up scholarships.

From 02/16/22 A to Z Sports article:

The speculation, however, is that Tennessee will be able to add more players via scholarship after the spring semester (for now it appears that UT is trying to get around the reductions by utilizing preferred walk-on spots).

So, as I originally posted, we got a "self imposed cap" right now, so we're off the market for transfers. Us potentially picking up players in the Spring appears to be pure speculation. Further, such transfers appear dependent upon *current* players leaving Tennessee via the portal, which represents a net sum zero equation.

As of early February, it seems to have been "speculation" to some:

Why Tennessee Vols fans shouldn't be concerned by low transfer portal ranking (atozsports.com)
First off, the Vols are dealing with some self-imposed scholarship reductions. Tennessee hasn’t said anything publicly about these reductions (which are in response to the violations that occurred under Pruitt), so it’s unclear exactly what kind of numbers crunch the Vols are dealing with.

The speculation, however, is that Tennessee will be able to add more players via scholarship after the spring semester (for now it appears that UT is trying to get around the reductions by utilizing preferred walk-on spots).

Another factor in the Vols’ lack of activity in the transfer portal this offseason is that Tennessee isn’t just blindly adding players for the sake of having more depth.

But by mid-Feb, Heupel seems to have confirmed the speculation, so straight from the horse's mouth...

Heupel explains Tennessee’s approach to the transfer portal this offseason (247sports.com)
As part of his appearance at the Rotary Club of Knoxville, Heupel took a few questions from fans, and one question about the lack of portal activity prompted Heupel to suggest the Vols were still dealing with the fallout from the NCAA and internal investigation into recruiting violations by the previous coaching staff and thus intentionally didn't add more transfers to “put ourselves in the best position long-term.” He went on to say the Vols would be more active in the spring. Tennessee added eight transfers after spring practice in 2021.

You don't become an expert with a quick google search and bravado. Your schtick on this gets old.

It seems like it’s been forever since we have been at 85. Good grief starting next year we better be making some headway getting there. We have been penalized and self penalized more than enough if the NCAA isn’t satisfied after this I am sorry tell them to kick rocks. Many schools wouldn’t play this nice. Take our chains freakin off! Soon!!!! GBO!
