Early during the broadcast Bilas and his partner briefly discussed that Coach Barnes picked up a shooting technique used by the Arizona staff - shooting lay-ups or close range bank shots higher and softer off the glass... or something like that. If there's any truth to that, couldn't they wait til the off season to re-learn how to shoot? They may be aiming instead of relying on muscle memory. Except for Uros - it's working!

Except that in the games since Arizona, our 2-pt% is up 14 points. I don't think that's the reason we missed layups. It isn't like they just installed that technique in the last 4 days.

It’s not really a shooting technique, it’s just that Zona practiced layups with tape on the backboard as a guide.

ZZ always seems to shoot his layups really high (to avoid the block since he’s so short I guess). As a result, he “blocks” a lot of layups himself….

Nah, someone I was talking to yesterday I think said it perfectly. Our guards are smaller and not the most athletic, so to get around defenders they have to put more spin on the ball than other more athletic players.

Several layups seemed rushed although with each play there was plenty of time to lay it in without a UK player near to block. Tshiebwe effect? 🤷🏻 Regardless, it was brutal to watch.

Although we had several (at least 6-8) layups missed unexplainably we also had several midrange and even deeper shots go in and out. Very odd to me. Just strange. We may go for many games without missing a one of those shots. That’s how weird the misses were. Probably the lack for rebounding and Kentucky’s defense is what beat us but still…we got to make those shots.

KY also had the advantage on the lucky bounce count. Sometimes it’s just not your day.

Nuke LaLoosh...Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose...sometimes it rains. These things happen. Probably a few extra layups, but no massive corrective action...the ball just wasn't falling. One of those days.

If I’m the coach, I’m feeling like you with the shooting - some nights they fall easier than others. What I’m not setting for was being out rebounded like that. I’m also not accepting anything less than 100% effort from anyone stepping on the floor, especially seniors. I think we’re deep enough to let ON sit a couple games until he can come out and play with his hair on fire. Dude has got to start giving maximum effort or it might be time to move on to one of the younger guys.

I thought our effort look great. Then there is ON. Love the guy but hes an enigma. He absolutely disappeared and he is absolutely out most talented and skilled big. It's mental and confidence with this guy. It's like he's intimidated instead of bowing up and challenging OT all night, like Uros did.

Awaka was locked in for his few minutes. Had Barnes rolled with him over ON, I believe we win on that alone.

You’re not alone in your confidence in Awaka as many others have made similar comments. I think he’s shown very well in his limited minutes but the sample size is still too small for me to be all in on him yet. I wonder if he’s not playing the 5 how would him and Uros together affect the floor spacing? He’s strong but can we play a 6’-8” 5 in SEC games for significant minutes? Awaka typically plays with Aidoo who has a green light to shoot from 15’ plus which allows Awaka to hang in the post area. I still wonder how he fits into the big picture at this point? He’s an intriguing young player and I look forward to watching his progress.

Wasn't just layups either:
“The Vols’ offense really struggled against the Wildcats, not just including the 10-for-21 shooting on layups. They shot only 3-for-21 from 3, tied for the fewest perimeter shots made and worst 3-point percentage all season. Here’s where it gets worse: The team grabbed just 11.8% of its misses, also its fewest all season.”

Why is everybody acting like this is a new issue? Missing layups and bunnies have been a problem for a while now. This is not the first game we have lost because of this.
I've said all season, and going back several years, we miss more shots at the rim than any team in the country. It really is unbelievable how many 2 footers we can't put down.

LOL. We even have 7' players with a 9' reach that have missed several layups.

Makes me sick but it IS kinda funny!

We definitely shoot a lot of prayers on our lay ups. Only so many of them can be answered
