This game went much better for us (GA) than it could have. We were on the better side of the bounce and the calls in this one most of the time, and that combined with playing at Sanford made it very tough for the Vols. Two things that made great impact on this game were the home field advantage and in-game adjustments.

The home field advantage was especially important the way this game played out. Beck’s play really made an impact in this one. Those few tough scrambles he made were huge for intensity, and the players and the crowd responded greatly bc no one expected to see that fire in Beck.

This was a very competitive game though. I’d very much like to see us play again on a neutral field. There are many more aspect of this game to discuss, so I started this thread to broadly give an opinion and to create a place for you guys to discuss with, ridicule, or ask questions about this game to a rival.

Hopefully we don’t end up with the penalty excuse makers.

Beck just did a solid job making the plays. Georgia was able to deal with our dline.

Momentum was a big issue on Saturday. With the referees, allowing your team to get that first down about five minutes left in the third quarter turn the momentum in favor of the dawgs. We don’t really need another place to discuss it. Your team won. Ours didn’t. maybe we’ll greet each other again later who knows? Go Vols!!

Georgia outplayed us, congrats. The game was closer than some make it out to be. There were some critical calls that could have possibly changed the flow of the second half but I won’t use that as a excuse. Our inability to move the ball in the second half was our demise. Georgia made better adjustments in the second half than we did. Our D could not get off the field on that last TD drive, I think our D played to much 4 man front and never made any adjustments. It’s tough to win on the road if you don’t do everything right. Congrats to Georgia they were the better team Saturday night. Maybe we will win out and make the playoffs. Our team and staff has to find some answers down the stretch. GBO

I agree, some of the calls were very critical. Many could have easily went the other way and that had great impact on momentum and the intensity of the crowd and the GA players. Watching this game over, it’s easier to see how the flow of this game greatly benefited GA. On a neutral field this could have been much different, especially in momentum and intensity. I’m not even gonna think about how this game may have played out in Neyland, but I will admit that I think in Neyland it would have been 60/40 Vols win before this game was played.

Sanford isn't THAT loud.

Now the home cookin' from the refs, definitely an advantage.

The game went about like I expected it to go, except I didn't expect us to be the ones jumping out to an early lead. We needed several big plays to go our way to win that game. We were close on a few, but just didn't get them. For whatever reason Carson Beck seems to save his best games for Tennessee. Maybe next year...

Beck was the player that he was supposed to be. The difference in the game was your Oline vs our D line. We didn’t get pressure w/ 4 and Beck made some throws up the seam. You guys made the plays that championship programs make when their backs are against the wall. I wouldn’t mind having another chance against you guys in the CFP. I think the outcome could be different.

Thank you for acknowledging that the game was competitive. A lot on here and in the national media are acting like it was total domination in all phases and the outcome was never in doubt.

Sanford isn’t loud? Lol, have you been there post-90s? Kidding, but seriously, it’s pretty freaking loud man. Very much loud enough to make it difficult on opposition offenses and/or impact momentum and intensity from the home team.

I agree everywhere. I too would like to see us play in the Playoff. I certainly wouldn’t be counting any chickens though, I just know it would be a very good game.

It would be interesting to see what adjustments we would make to counter the fact that Beck had pressure maybe once the entire game. Many on here would disagree with me, but I think our offense played its best game versus you guys since Heupel has been here. We were very balanced and Nico converted multiple 3rd and longs to extend drives. We had several crucial drops that could’ve kept drives going, you guys getting out of that 2 and 25 was a huge part of the game, albeit a questionable one. We punted and played field position and expected to get stops and for the first time all season we couldn’t get off the field .

The scoreboard read 31-17, but I actually think the margin was very thin. We couldn’t overcome some of our mistakes and the positive thing for us is that some of some things are correctable. Now if we have the opportunity to make the corrections in a CFP remains to be seen. I think we are a Playoff team, but we’ll see.

I was there Saturday (2nd time in Athens). It's loud, but not THAT loud.

I was there also - It was loud ! I was 4 rows from the field (thanks for tickets given to me !) - louder than upper bowls or rows I would assume. I was glad to have a hoodie to cover my ears a little from the noise and the cold ! First time in Athens - it was a lot of fun.

It's nowhere near as loud as Neyland. I'd say that Ben Hill Griffin is/was louder as well (though it's been a few years since I've made a trip down there)

No disagreement there when compared to Neyland. I have left Knoxville with ears ringing for two days. But with that being said, it was still loud in Athens.

I agree with all of OP's comments. However, the reason that Beck played so well is because our DC decided not to blitz him the whole night for reasons unbeknownst to every vol fan. Banks has put out one of the top D's in the country this year and our strength has been dominating the LOS and putting pressure on the qb. Everyone and their mother knew that Beck had 12 picks on the season coming into the game and that most all of them were caused by him being pressured. I am dumbfounded at why Banks would not bring the house early and often to preclude Beck from ever getting into a rhythm. Or at least bring it later in the game to try to throw him off after he ate our lunch.

Well perhaps not as loud as Neyland. You guys have approximately 10,000 more fans and part of Sanford is open so I assume it lets some sound escape. It’s still loud enough to have a major impact, so I’d say all things considered it’s a pretty tough atmosphere for a visiting team.

That probably does have some impact.

It's loud, just not THAT loud lol.

If you told me before the game that we would score 17 points in the first half I would’ve thought we had it. Did not expect Georgia and Beck to rebound so quickly after Ole Miss dominated them. Offensive playcalling from Georgia was near perfect, Beck didn’t make a single turnover. This may seem a bit biased, but it seemed like UGA had to play nearly perfect on offense or we would’ve had this one. That’s what good teams do though. They get it done when it matters the most. Tennessee has got to start winning some of these games. We can’t let this come down to the committee putting us in, we have to remove all doubt
