Potential Kids to Finish With

prater eliminated us way before he chose USC. i forgot about uko though. and what are the chances of us hiring the RB coach?

I think he was considered one of our top candidates. I would say that if we do not get Bassacia from TB, then it is a good possibility.

well unless that happens, we have no chance of getting their top running back. even if we do hire him, i still doubt we get the kid. baxter right?

Yeah, Rivals #1 APB. They only list him with offers from SDSU, USC, and Michigan, along with interest from UCLA. Sure he has more, but I am sure a lot of people held back because he is a local kid that committed back in June of 2008.

i guess we will see what happens. anyone know when we are looking to hire an RB coach?

Indiana I think you are discounting two things,

What it will mean if we get Todd McNair Todd McNair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (who is not headed to Seattle on the rumor mill). If TN had him we would have more of the successful USC coaches from their best run (Kiffin, Orgeron and Todd M) than any other school in CFB and it would not be close.

and how much work we already put in with lots of them. We are not in it for Ronald Powell, he will be a Gator, but Prater (as discussed with Fulton), Josh Shirley, Dietrich Riley, George Uko and Demetrius Wright are all guys our staff worked VERY hard on before Pete announced he was leaving.

Does anyone else think this thread is getting waaaaaaay too ahead of itself? I like the optimism, but come on...

Pete is leaving. It's all but official. He's receiving 35 million over 7 years.

Seattle is sorting out what they are going to do about the Rooney rule (don't even get me started on the idiocy of that rule). Once that is settled (interview a "token" minority guy, or pay a fine) Carroll will be announced.

Thanx MHF! :hi: LV was right, what a huge turnaround from the gloom & doom of the "dead period".

As far as how do we make room for top recruits if they want to commit, that's a great problem to have!

I think the staff will see Ralph Williams moving on, and I think grades wise that John Brown may not get here, even though I truly would rather have a grown man who looked good years ago as an SEC DT over a freshman. We could use him immediately as we can use Thompkins immediately at WR and Cullen at OL.

We may take 1 more WR. If we do it will be an absolute stud like Kyle Prater, Da'Rick Rogers or Trovon Reed. Drop Christian Green here, as a possibility and a must take.

I think we take 2 more LB, 3 if Ralph Williams leaves and all 3 are stud LBs who want to come. Likely just two from Corey Nelson, Christian Jones, Josh Shirley, LeDarius Owens and CJ Mosley (who I am expecting at Auburn and AL). If we "just" had Michael Taylor, Corey Nelson and Christian Jones, it would be one of the finest LB hauls TN has ever had and set us up for a nasty defense under Monte with team speed comparable to the Al Wilson, Raynoch Thompson, Eric Westmoreland era.

Very speculative to say, 1. We hire Todd McNair and 2. We get Dillon Baxter. If 1. happens, TN will get more California talent than any school outside the Pac 10 as long as he stays. If we do not get Dillon Baxter, or Dyer to leave Auburn, or Mack Brown to leave UF or Lattimore, or Seastrunk (who I think may have planted the UT thugs story so he can shock everyone) then I think UT may end up with one of the fall back GA RBs. I thought that we would take zero and wait on next year if we missed an elite back, but I think the staff does not waste In Homes...

DE we want Lemonier, Stripling and Ronald Powell (who should announce for UF today) but we are okay if we get none in that our class is loaded at this position. If we get the first two we take both, and a guy like J Smith may get to try LB instead of just trying to bulk up.

Secondary players, Victor Hampton is announcing in a few hours and I expect for it to be for South Carolina. We are recruiting Blake Sims for lots of reasons, but he and Meline could end up in the secondary with Dixon so the class is already not bare there. We love Demetrius Wright (who was definitely a Trojan but who we may get now) and we love Demar Dorsey and Nickell Robey. This class will be fine, although UF and Alabama may end up with better classes at this position. We take 2-3 guys here (3 only if Blake Sims is one).

DT George Uko, Jeff Whittaker (who showed up at our bowl practices with TJ Striping), Kelcy Quarles (who will be a Vol if we can get his dad to agree) and Brandon Willis (who may be back now that his 99 problems no longer include a b) are all very real possibilities. I think we are looking for 1 or 2 depending on John Brown's grades.

OL finishes out the class...I think a few guys including James Stone are just waiting for the love and will sign if we push. Chaz Green is a must take and I think he will be part of the class. Arie K, John Cullen, Shon Coleman, Damien Robinson, Torrian Wilson...Lots of great options here. I think we take the best 3 and call it a class. Caveat...if Chaz, Arie K, John Cullen (immediate help) and Torrian Wilson all wanted to come, I think the staff would have to think about taking 4. I think they would also be much less excited about the Marques Pair project than they once were.

0-1 WR
1-2 LB
0-1 RB
0 TE (we wanted them badly, just missed, I pray this is the surprise offensive recruit)
0-2 DE
2-3 Secondary players
1-2 DT
2-4 OL

Very similar to my own assessment. Great job.

I think we will have a solid Dline and Oline class, which is absolutely critical for our class. If we can snag 1-2 more LBs and get just 1 fantastic RB, we will have a class nothing short of amazing. We will be getting some secondary help. We will contend for top WR class in the country.

If you look at the way we are recruiting, we look more like Alabama in terms of getting nasty big lines than we do any other school. We will have the best USC connection to pick up the future pieces (especially if we get McNair) and we are intelligently recruiting not with a gimmick offense but with NFL coaches getting college players ready for the NFL in an NFL system.

To everyone who keeps saying true freshmen OL cannot contribute, I say remember Cosey Coleman. Fred Weary would have contributed early as well if he did not have the broken bone in his foot requiring those screws.

Ah I'd forgotten the horrible side effect of good news on the recruiting front... MHF's overly optimistic novels.

Wow, brave to post that picture. Are you in a goth band? Host a public access show down in Tampa and appeared on Saturday Night Live a few years back?

I remember a kid named Aaron Douglas!

Think Elam committing to UF actually helps us with Dorsey? Assuming he has the grades. And do we take Dorsey with all the other prospects we're in on and with Dixon committing last night?

I don't think we can pass on Dorsey either with his speed. He is multi-dimensional and we all know speed kills. (overused cliche, I know).

I love your posts MHF. Sometimes they can be a tad too long, but they put everything out there so you analyze everything. I like it. Keep up the good work

Elam and possibly Riley to UF should definitely help us with Dorsey. Now as long as he can do his classwork we should get him instead of WVU.

AL and UF both have unreal secondary classes this year, but if we finish with Dorsey and Dixon as our final two our secondary in two years if J Jackson can stay out of trouble will be the equal of theirs.
