Potential of our Defense

I love when people call pessimism "reality". The reality is we have no idea what has been done in the off season, and how we'll stack up. Oh we may have some rough idea about the players. But history has shown a lot of past defenses to suddenly come together, and suddenly fall apart. Tired of people dogging our defense before they have even played a game. If they start to give up during a game...THEN their fair game.....but the season hasn't even started yet, for all you know they are born again hard....and beastly.... a little more support for our guys please.

Nah, you're better off being a Negavol. Here's why.

1. You can always defend yourself by saying you're a realist.

2.If the Vols lose, then you were right all along (e-cred).

3.If the Vols win, just jump on the bandwagon and admit you were wrong(who cares, we're winning).

Right. It takes absolutely no courage at all to be pessimistic and negative all the time. There are some here who have admitted that they do it to avoid being disappointed... that is cowardly.

Pessimists and optimists are both generally unrealistic. One denies the negative. The other denies the positive.

A "realist" can be hopeful without gullible and concerned without being fatalistic.

I think the D has a lot of potential. We had a stout defense when Wilcox was here. This team has many of those same guys who now have more experience and are physically more mature. Returning to the more familiar 4-3 will help as well. If last year this D had continued to build on what they did in 2011, we would be going crazy in anticipation of what this D could do this year.

This team is gonna surprise a lot of people. From what I'm hearing my analysis is that we actually have a lot of talent on defense and I've been trying to defend Worley all off season. The poster mentioning the vandy game is right. I've tryed to point that out but facts mean nothing to the Dobbinites

That defense has 2 major problems.

1. Pass coverage at the lb and secondary level. You can be mediocre to bad in one area, but not both. So, a team like Florida that hasn't even bothered to throw to a wr actually has had success in the passing game. Got to able to take something away from a qb.

2. Defensive ends. Haven't been strong against the run and haven't generated a pass rush.

McCullers will be wasted if the people on the edge can not hold their ground more effectively.

Doing any of these things at a normal level will generate vast improvement

Careful, using sound logic will invoke the wrath of both Negavols and Sunshine Pumpers with equal fervor.

I think the transition to the 3-4 was partly to blame for this last year.

I think our CB's will make or break us. I think we like to have our CB's Man to Man and pass rush up front. If our CB's loose track of their man or can't keep up, we will be in big trouble IMO.

If you are right, then its going to be a long season. On paper, CB is our weakest position at the moment.

IMHO I don't believe the coaches will choose a defensive set that plays to their weakness - at least I hope they're smarter than that.

Since pretty much the same LB's were there and the D gave up around 2 more TD's per game... I believe you can remove the "partly" from above.

Probably a lot of cover 2 with them selling out to get pressure up the middle on passing downs. High risk, high reward.

Coleman may be locked up in man from time to time but I would be very surprised if the other CB is regardless of who wins the job.

My belief is their ability depends greatly on 2 factors almost completely outside their control.

1. Ability for the offense to get 1st downs and keep them off the field.
One of our biggest issues of the last several years. Even decent defenses stink if they are on the field too much.

2. Their ability to avoid injury.
Also a recurring theme from previous years. We are just too thin. We have enough SEC talent to field a good defense but we do not have enough backups with SEC talent and experience to replace many key guys.

One guy posted that his friend got to officiate a practice and that the defense looked good/competent and the offense NSM. I really worry about our receiver play. Inconsistent receiver play will make us predictable. A predictable offense will go three and out often and going three and out often just strains the defense that much more.

If anyone, ANYONE was the HC and DC last year they win 9 games, maybe 10. Look how UGAly did with a sub par defense.

I think the Sunseri hire was a blessing in disguise. I supported DD getting a fair shot to prove something and he got it. Had someone competent been the DC then UT probably wins 9 or 10 games... and loses games because of Dooley. His recruiting declined each year and was going very poorly even before last year's collapse.

In short, he was unlikely to ever win at a high level at UT. SS made sure he did no more damage before someone else took over.

UGA allowed less than 20 ppg last year and was 6th in the SEC in both total and scoring D. Not great... but not subpar either.

Notably... they converted to the 3-4 as well. Last year represented a drastic improvement for them and they HAVE been getting the players they supposedly needed to play it well.

Maybe because of complexity or something else... but it seems the 3-4 just works for a select few in CFB.

If healthy i believe our defense is 4th best in the SEC but if injuries start to pile up could end up back at the bottom

Probably the truest statements in this thread.

If we could of lined up correctly last year. The FL game would of been a lot closer.

If Jacques Smith and Corey Vereen are as good as I think they are, combined with Big Dan in the middle, then our D-Line has no problems. To be honest the Defense is what I am looking forward to seeing the most.

It still hurts to think that last season we could put up 35 to 40 points and still lose the game. If this defense can keep us in the game we'll upset a couple of those top ten teams. This season hopefully if the offense scores that many regardless of who we are playing we'll win. I like our WR's and running backs QB is the biggest concern on offense right now.

I agree. Its wierd that we are now worried about the Offense and the Defense is the thing that looks good lol
