I think bands are one of the huge live experiences that make college football so great, something you don't get with NFL ball. I just never understood why he insisted on playing the same crap...year after year. I mean, obviously, I want Rocky Top and Down The Field to continued to be played, they are tied to the University itself. But Livin' On A Prayer? Really? He STILL had the band playing that, year after year, game after game? I was talking with a friend about this a few days back and I think this could be the easiest fix, ever. Have the members of each group of instruments (i.e. tuba, drums, trumpet, etc.) players vote on X number of current/relevant/cool/hip/whatever songs, that they think would be good to play as a band while they're in the seats between plays, etc. Then have the each group vote for their favorite from all the groups, except their own instrumental group. Highest X number of votes are the songs that get played during the game. Fun for the POTSB members, relevant for the fans/recruits in attendance. Maybe this could cut down on some of the piped in music, if some of the songs crossed over. Hell, with any luck, I can live the rest of my life without ever hearing Livin' On A Prayer played by a marching band again.

The players and recruits. Just enjoy them playing football and don't worry about the music so much. JMO.

You're forgetting about who pays for all of it. The fans do. Without the fans, Butch wouldn't have a job. The gameday experience was made for the fans, not for the players.

It's going towards the NFL. I've been to a game, and it really sucked. It was stale and fake.

I see why you are saying but the problem with your idea is that there are royalties that must be paid, arrangements that have to be written, and rehearsals to run. I am by no means defending Sousa but he can't just say to the band, "What do you want to play?" There's a lot more to it than that. On top of that, there would be thunderous opposition if the band played anything with explicit lyrics.

"Come on Eileen" is about teenage sex, but they played that a few years ago.

Yeah, royalties is one thing I never thought of. Obviously it would take some time for a band the size of UT's to get all synced up with new songs, but I don't really see what's so wrong with Sousa('s replacement) allowing the band to have creative input as to what they will be playing. I assume that a large portion of the band are music majors/minors and would have a musical mind worth getting a younger person's opinion on. I'm not trying to knock someone's musical knowledge when they have a PhD in Music. I realize that he knows more about it than I ever will. But I also know that 60+ year old white men probably don't have their finger on the pulse of what's cool for college students/recruits/etc. At 36 years old, I don't either. But by asking for input from the band members, it continues to make the POTSB more relevant for the younger generation of future Vol fans and alumni, IMO.

Also, is the chorus dept going to start singing with them? Why would explicit content cause a thunderous opposition from grey hairs that have no idea what song is playing to begin with?

every part of our school has taken a nose dive....

people who make decisions for UT picking their noses and "tasting it rather than wasting it" on tv, decline across the board in sports for the last couple years, now the band needs someone to guide them into the T formation...sad day.

at least maybe the atheletics dept. is getting on track

Not that you make any valid points but Cheek isn't an alumni. I'm assuming you're referring to Cheek as the nose-picker.

And you nailed the spelling of Athletics also.
