Tennessee took advantage of the extra allotted practices for their Italy trip this week, getting to work on Monday and Tuesday afternoon.*
First off, since this was the first chance to see the newcomers with the rest of the team, a couple of observations. Armani Moore definitely looks like an SEC athlete. He's got good size and strength for a guard and is explosive. Zo said today that he'll get a look at the point but also on the wing.*

Reese, fresh off putting up big numbers for the Puerto Rican National team, has a chance to help on the wing this year, but people probably shouldn't take his stats from last weekend's tournament and automatically project him as a huge impact guy. No doubt though he has a chance to be a surprising sleeper. He's a little more solidly built than I expected and can shoot the ball. Zo told me that he really thought one of the most encouraging things about Reese is that he feels like eventually he'll be able to guard four different spots on the floor. The kind of detail that's a big deal to the Vols' head coach.*

Edwards, as you'd expect from a junior college player, is the most physically developed of the three. He has a nice stroke and looks like a solid athlete. My early impression--and let's remember it's July and a lot can change--is that he'll be the most ready to push for significant time when October gets here.*

On the injury front, both Maymon and Golden looked good to me. Maymon still is dealing with some soreness but he pushed himself hard today and both guys are clearly on the way back.

Kenny Hall faced up and knocked down a couple of 17-18 footers during five-on-five work today, lending some credence to his talk about putting in the time working on his shot.

Stokes is pretty much uncontrollable for anyone on the roster. He can more or less end up at the front of the rim every time he touches it.*

I continue to think that McRae has made some notable strides in both his strength and his overall game. Seems poised to become a consistent factor if he stays on track.

Dave Hart stopped by to visit with coach Martin after practice and also spent some time talking to former Vol Ron Slay who is in town this month finishing up his degree and a frequent presence around the team.

I've also heard from people that Jordy looks very controlled so far. Still getting to the rim, but appears much smarter and under control.

-everything I'm hearing makes me feel better and better about my unpopular Edwards expectations.

-also about my rotation prediction

-the stokes comment gets me VERY excited.

-think Kenny and Jordy are both going to have good seasons.

Few teams are going to have a player that can match up with Stokes defensively. There are going to be a lot of double-downs. We better have a great shooting stroke this year, because defenses are going to be packing it in tight. Anybody with reliable range is going to be given a great opportunity this year, just based on how teams are going to have to guard us.

We probably see this through the first part of the season. IMO there will be a competition between mcbee, Richardson, Moore for 2 spots, and yemi falls out as well unless foul trouble.

Trae/Moore
McRae/mcbee/Richardson
Edwards/q
Maymon
Stokes/hall/yemi

I still think the key for Stokes to have great success (and for the team) is for Stokes to have gotten better with free throws.

With him sounding like he's figured out how to be physical, one of the few ways to stop him will be to be physical with him and put him on the line. If he gets better at free throws, then teams won't be willing to constantly put him on the line.

I don't think it's a huge factor, or the main key, but it'll be a contributor. Probably the difference in 5-6 points a game, which could be a few wins.

I may have worded that a little wrong. I guess what I'm saying is I think it could possibly be a difference in how teams may game plan for Stokes.

Ron Slay!!! Gotta love that guy. Glad to hear he is finishing up his degree. Also, Jordan bulking up and playing smarter is exactly the kind of report I like reading! This guy could be the difference between a first game loss or an SEC Championship to me. Another consistent playmaker is what we need.

Stokes being dominant is expected but I can't wait to see how much.

If Hall can do that consistently, I'd be tickled pink. I think he can be better around the rim than Chism was and if he can hit down that 17 footer every now and then, talk about amazing!!!!!

I'm excited! Can't WAIT for this season to start. I think it's going to be a special year for our ball team.

Hall really needs to step it up. He's so talented, but he just rarely plays with ferocity. The few times that he has been aggressive, he's been nearly unstoppable.

You mean after Stokes, Maymon, Golden, whomever gets the backup PG minutes and Hall keeping his head straight, then McRae is the key. Right?

I think he's expecting, like most, atleast the same from stokes, maymon and golden. So if that's the case, many feel if McRae can step up to his potential, that'll benefit us the most.

It's no secret we've lacked a wing scorer/threat. add a legitimate wing, to a good PG, and maybe the best front court duo in the country, and you've got a starting 5 that can hang with anybody in the country.

Reese sounds like the glue player type. Knock down shots. Get a board. D up on a couple of spots. Those guys are the keys for a team. Outside of Ky and their NBA camp, college ball is a game of ball players, not just one on one guys.

Regarding Kenny, he should be inside working on jump hooks and finishing moves till he passes out each day. I don't want to watch a game with him shooting 17 footers unless it's at the buzzer.

Exactly. Stokes is going to be dominant. He's too darn big and talented not to take over games in the paint. Golden has improved every step of the way so I expect nothing but a confident pg who makes great decisions. Maymon is an absolute beast that gets zero respect. I'm glad he has a chip on his shoulder and is confident at the same time.

IMO, it's Hall and Jordan who make or break our team. Both would be leaps and bounds better if they are smarter on the court. If these fellas could check the emotion at the gym door than watch out!

My wish list for McRae is to develop a general understanding of where his other players are when he drives to the paint. He can slash with the best of the them but hasn't figured out that the window closes a lot quicker in college than it did in HS and needs to learn to kick it back out or make a play instead of looking for contact or tossing up an ill advised shot. If this kid played smarter, he'd be an absolute beast!!! A couple of lbs on his frame sure wouldn't hurt either. I really hope he's went through an extensive S&C program this offseason.

Hall needs to play smarter too and check his emotions. A layup and a dunk count the exact same so don't throw it down if it's easier to lay it in. Also, recognizing screens better and becoming a smarter ball player on defense would be great. I hate the dumb, ticky-tacky fouls.

If he can hit the 15-17 foot jumpers. it will open the inside and stokes/Maymom can have a field day inside. Looks good to me.

If KH takes more than one 15 ft jump shot a game we are in trouble and in need of a different offense

I realize stretching out the D opens things up, but not with KH. He needs to stay on the block, and I don't want him going out for a pick and pop either. That's your 8th option on an offense with only 5 players.
