I got ripped by the Dobbinites for saying that Riley could sling the ball around as good or better than the rest. Live in Charlotte and saw him in HS...common criticism was "that's not against SEC defenses." The bottom line is it doesn't matter if you're throwing to a first grader...you can either put he ball 50 or 60 yds down the field with "touch" on it or you can't. I've yet to see the others do so...can't wait to see North haulin' in those bombs over SEC corners. Then we will be able to run the ball. Seems that Butch's offense passes to set up the run, rather than traditional running to set up playaction passes. JMO GBO VFL HUBANegavols

Thats what I am seeing with Riley as well. If they can keep him developing, he is going to be a serious threat downfield and that means all that juicy new talent as WRU and our RBs are going to go to town!

Ainge's Notes and Highlights from Tuesday's Practice - Tennessee Sports Radio - Tennessee Sports Radio

Ainge's notes:
Nobody, and I mean nobody, can cover Von Pearson. This is looking less and less like a knock on the secondary and more of a reflection of just how good Pearson is. Every time Pearson caught a ball on Tuesday it was an explosive play that left me and Jayson Swain in awe of his ability. After every play Von made, Swain would scream at me and give me the ’Swain-face’…Needless to say, we think Von Pearson is the real deal.

Josh Malone scored at least three touchdowns in team periods on long explosive plays. He touched the ball on screens, go-routes, as well as short passes and made big yards after the catch all day. He is really starting to come along. Josh is a great example of someone who took the time off during Spring Break to get better. *Sidenote* When Malone scored his first long touchdown, Marquez North sprinted the length of the field to celebrate with him and screamed, “It’s about time you scored one, Josh.” These guys are pushing each other and cheering for each other on every play.

Daniel Helm made another one-handed catch with a defender draped all over him. He has a lot to learn, but he continues to show the ability to make plays in this league.

Early in practice, during drills, Justin Coleman hit North so hard that the ‘Helmet-Cam’ that Marquez was wearing broke off and went flying across the field. North had a good day, but Coleman and his defensive teammates reminded him throughout practice about the hit the sophomore took from Coleman.

If I had to pick one player on offense to watch out for that nobody has been talking about much this spring, it’s Devrin Young. He had a few more explosive plays on Tuesday and it seems that nobody on the team can get him on the ground. Including A.J. Johnson in one-on-one tackling drills. Devrin has had a great attitude this spring and has really made his case to get touches in the fall.
The first team defense did very well during 11-on-11 work bringing pressure on third down. The offense really struggled to move the ball against them. It may have been the worst offensive performance of the spring, but there are a lot of black stripes on the offense right now. The second team defense has a long way to go and will rely on the freshman who get here in the summer to provide instant depth.

The new offensive line really struggled picking up blitz pressure..which isn’t surprising at this point, but they are definitely not where they need to be and have a long way to go. They struggled to communicate the protections to each other and left the quarterbacks to fend for themselves on too many plays.

Eh I don't think so. Circle of life seems to be a one on one competition. If I remember correctly Bull in the ring is one guy who would stand in the middle of
a circle of players, and the coach would call out a player to hit him. It's a pretty dangerous drill that I don't think is allowed anymore, but I'm sure coaches still do it.

That is a nasty drill.

Bet Brodus can whoop Woody...hit him upside the head with a kegger

We used to do one where the ball carrier faced three defenders lined up one after another. After the initial contact the first defender would run to the back of the line and the next defender would take a shot. Kind of like an indian run. And it just kept going like that until the ball carrier was able to get past everyone... Or not lol.

We called it escape from Baghdad. That was a nasty drill too but I think the one on one match ups tell you a lot more about the fight each player has

You know I think you are right. I guess its the more modern version of "bull in the ring". Either way that is what some of the news outlets are calling it for some reason

who is picture 12 /45? Its obviously a new guy with the stripe but its hard to see his number, he looks big for a freshman.

I must have missed it. I don't recall seeing any rabid Dobbians or Dobbinites out for blood just cause someone was a Rifleman supporter. I'm all Dobb Goblin myself yet have paid proper dues to the Rifleman and the Whirlybird. Even went so far to say that Rifleman looked like he has Bray abilities without the attitude. So would like see links to posts where Dobbinites took a bite for a Rifleman slight.

Personally, I think we will have three really good QBs and that all three will see action at various points in the season and games.

In my brief look at the video, I must say I saw a few Dobb Goblin passes I didn't like. They looked like they were dead ducks from start to finish, wobbling and struggling to reach the receiver. Might be he didn't want to throw too hard on short passes. But they'd be easily intercepted in a game if a DB is anywhere near the receiver. I know he can do better as I saw when he threaded that bullet pass to DY for a TD in the KY game.

As always, I call it as I see it.

I agree with you. There have been mixed reports though from the media. Everyone says Furgie's passes look better but they have also said that Dobbs has been more consistent. Neither of us will know until O&W game at least. Hopefully by then they can shave the competition down to at least two QBs

Peterman is trying as hard as anyone but if he knows that he is #4 out of Spring practice, then I can see him transferring. He is a great kid, so I don't mind if he stays.

I suppose Worley could do one of those Graduated Senior transfers too, but I don't see him doing that and he may still be the starter. Between the bruising SEC defenses, our 5 new OL starters and just plain weird stuff happening, I would like to have 3 guys ready to play QB. Besides, each can hone their own special trick plays.

Now what does that say about D.Young! Go KTown kid!

To be honest Johnson not getting him down is a bit worrisome.

Agreed. At times this past season, all a RB would have to have was balance and he could escape Aj. He would just try to throw them down instead of form tackling
