There have been some major changes as Grayson has transitioned from the hospital (UAB in Birmingham) to Shepherd Pathways (outpatient therapy in Atlanta).

Day 80 @ Shepherd Pathway
October 5th at 8:30
During PT today Gray was back on the vibration board. He did squats and cross body chops while standing and kneeling. They set him up on an app called PT Pal where they put in different exercises for him to do each night when we get home. He also worked on coordination doing different drills with his feet. In OT he worked on fine motor skill activities using his left hand. Picking up small items with pinchers and larger using the whole hand. Also worked with strength puddy. This afternoon we headed back to the hospital to do another treadmill session for an hour. He left there again drenched in sweat and loved every minute of it!
We had a sweet visit with my mom and brother today and they were able to watch Grayson on the treadmill. After we left there we went to dinner and Gray ate 8oz of Salmon and some mashed potatoes. Needless to say his belly is full and he is tired!
We also had a sweet visitor from Oxford too!!!
TGI almost Friday!
We are ready to watch Hewitt beat Thompson!

Day 79 @ Shepherd Pathways
October 4th @ 10:30
Day 8 of Outpatient
Gray started the morning with PT. He warmed up for 20 minutes on the bike then started working those legs! He is still working on coordination and balance so step ups, walking forwards and backwards with obstacles and then walked outside on the side walk. This gave him an uneven terrain to practice walking on as well as distractions from the cars and outside noise.
In rec therapy he played several games that worked on eye/hand coordination and memory. Lastly he had speech where he tried several level 6 foods! He did great and we got cleared to eat chopped meats with gravy or sauce, strawberries, grapes without the skin, cooked/steamed veggies, and several other foods! We still are holding off on breads for now but we are so happy for this next step!
SO HAPPY!
🙌🏼

After speech we left Pathways and heading over to the hospital. We get to do the treadmill 2 days a week now! This may be one of Grays favorite thing to do. He leaves with sweat rolling down his face and a wet tshirt!
After treadmill we went to the 2nd floor and visited our Therapy Family that we have missed so much! Gray was SUPER excited to see them and they were so happy to see him! They all commented how much weight he had gained in 2 weeks! We also got to visited some of our friends/neighbors on our hall. We were so thankful to meet this young lady we have been praying for who came to Shepherd right before we left, as well as the family of the gentleman in Grays old room. Shepherds will always hold a special place in our hearts and we will forever be thankful!!!

Day 78 @ Shepherd Pathway
October 3rd @ 8:25
Day 7 of Outpatient
Tuesday started off at 8AM with an extra class we added on! It’s basically modified circuit training. Grayson had to complete 5 stations, one minute each 3 times each.
Station 1: Crunches
Station 2: Glute Bridges
Station 3: Step ups with knee raise
Station 4: Bicep Curls
Station 5: Bird Dogs
After that he headed to Music Therapy where he worked on voice strength and may have sang Rocky Top a couple of times!
🧡

OT was next where he worked on coordination and visual multitasking. He also worked on fine motor pinching by picking up marbles, left hand strength with puddy, and visual multitasking by picking up a deck of cards in order by suit colors.
After OT he had his weekly Neuro Psych meeting where they talk about where he is now and really anything Gray wants to talk about. Everyone, including Grayson is working toward independence like he had before his accident.
Please pray with us for Graysons voice to get stronger and his balance/coordination to continue to improve.
He will be trying more Level 6 foods tomorrow! This is big! We are praying his strong tongue and strong swallows will allow him to move up!
Thank you all so much for your support and prayers DAILY! They carry our family more than you know!
We are so thankful!
Can’t wait to see this sweet kiddo back in his baseball uniform on the field!

Day 77 @ Shepherd Pathways
October 2nd @ 9:25
Day 6 of Outpatient
The therapy started first thing this morning. Grayson had 2 PT sessions. In the first he road the bike for 30 minutes using arms and legs. Then walked laps around Pathways going forwards and backwards. After that he hopped on the vibration board and did front and back step ups, as well as, side to side. The vibration of the board helps with the shaking of his legs as he steps up and down. He also worked on his balance and coordination using dots on the floor and the balance rail.
During rec therapy he got to play Skip Bo! Nice little body rest after PT!
I wanted to thank a few people tonight for their prayers, support and generosity!
Mr. Turner and his family for the beautiful TN artwork and goodie bag!
Mrs. Cornelius and their family for the Team Building book!
Major League Baseball pitcher, Jim Abbot for the encouraging video and signed baseball! If you don’t know his story you should look it up! Wow, just WOW!

Great update!
I have been drawn to Gray's story. I think it's because of compassion for his parents. I cannot imagine having the strength that they have met this challenge with. I am sure it makes it easier when you see how determined Gray is to put in the work. They are an amazing family that has a huge support network. Support groups like that do not happen for folks that are not worthy. They walk the walk and it shows.

Day 83 Shepherd Pathway
October 8 @ 8:20
Sunday:
This morning when we walked outside to go to church and it felt AMAZING!! Yes Fall!!!
🍂
🍁
You can come and stay as long as you want!
We have been studying the book of Acts at church and wrapped up chapter 19 today! Grayson got to hug Pastor Steve for the first time in a LONG TIME. Pastor Steve was at UAB weekly praying and loving on our family! Our church community is the absolute best!
🙏🏻
🫶🏻

After church we at lunch and David took Ty and Gray fishing again! Gray caught a MONSTER!
When they got back Grayson wanted to set up the batting tee and hit, but not before he went through every part of his bat bag! Lots of snack wrappers, water bottles, dirty socks and baseball pants that haven’t been washed all summer! He loved every minute. You could see the wheels turning in his head as he was re-living the items in the bag!
After that, we grilled hamburgers with the Bambergs and hung out with Knox! He may have played a little wiffle ball too!
Now we are heading back to Atlanta!
Emma enjoyed her weekend meeting her boyfriends sisters new baby and spent some time at the aquarium!
We are praying over this upcoming week for Gray and his therapist!

Day 86 @ Shepherd Pathway
October 11th @ 8:55
Day 13 of Outpatient
Happy Hump Day!!!
PT started off with Gray wearing TheraTogs which are used to improve postural alignment and stability, movement skill and precision, and joint stability! With them on he pushed against a bar someone was holding, carried a weight while walking, and step ups.
In rec therapy he was with other adolescents and they played Tapple. Each round, one player draws a topic card, then starts the timer. In the next ten seconds, that player must give a single word answer that fits within the topic, press down the letter key in a special electronic device that corresponds to the first letter of that word, and restart the timer.
In speech the did the synchrony test again that measures swallow and he was officially moved up to Level 6 fruits, vegetables, and meats!!!
🙌🏼

We went to treadmill over at the hospital after that and Grayson got to practice running again! His ABSOLUTE favorite thing in the world!!!
🏃‍♂️

THEN ….
Our sweet, sweet friends from Knoxville came to visit! We went to play indoor putt putt and then dinner! It was a busy day but our hearts are happy!

Day 94 @ Shepherd Pathway
October 19th @ 8:45
Day 19 of Outpatient
Busy day in the therapy gym today! Started with OT… continuing to work on fine motor skills with his left hand. They played several games on the big white board that worked on eye hand coordination and fine motor. Also did ballon toss.
Then he had music therapy where he got to play the guitar and sing. Of coarse he picked Rocky Top because of the big game Saturday. He also worked on his speech and pronouncing words by commentating a Vols game! He said that was a lot of fun!
During PT they went outside and did side shuffles down the sidewalk and walk forwards and backwards. He also did different exercises using the medicine ball against the building.
We left therapy and headed over to the hospital for our 2nd treadmill session this week. The therapist really worked on Gray not stiffening his left leg while walking and did exercises to strengthen his bottom and hips.
Per Grays request, after 1 hour of treadmill , we went downstairs to the “real gym” for arm day. He did 2 rounds each of shoulder presses, chest machine, tricep extensions, and then ended on the elliptical!
💪🏼

We are ready for tomorrow! We love the weekends when we get to spend time with our family and friends!

October 23rd @ 8:00
Day 21 of Outpatient

🙌🏼MONDAY 🙌🏼

Started with PT bright and early! He got to do the virtual reality on the uneven board. He skied down a mountain and then went through a maze. Tilting the board forward made him go up, tilting backwards made him go down, and so on. He said it was really hard but worked a lot of his body!
He played kings in the corner and rummikub during Rec therapy and then worked his left hand with different levels of puddy!
Back to PT he did squats while kneeling. Stood on a bosu balance ball and did squats while holding weights. Tossed ball while standing on the bosu ball.
He left therapy and went to the hospital to his weekly treadmill session!
After that was finished, David and Gray went to the Shepherd Board meeting to share Grays story with them and how much progress he has made during therapy.

2.Leg Raises
3. Bird Dogs
4. Planks

Headed to speech and took a test called Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS). This test predicts everyday problems associated with a major area of cognitive deficit that can impede functional recovery and the ability to respond to rehabilitation programs. We will have his results tomorrow.
Then he went over to OT and did some cooking! He made homemade pancakes
🥞
😋

After that he had his weekly meeting with the Neuro Psychologist to check in and see how things are going.
We came back to the apartment to rest for a little bit then went to the gym at Shepherda to work out. After that we went to the grocery with a list for Gray to help us shop!
Busy day and we are ready for tomorrow!

October 28th @ 11:30
I love Saturdays, Fall, and Tennessee Football!
Gray and David went to the farm today to get ready for hunting season. Gray has been approved to hunt out of a blind on the ground with supervision. He is able to shoot a crossbow that is on a stand for him. Grayson has been looking forward to this season to hunt and spend time with his dad!
❤️

I did a lot of unpacking today while the boys were gone! We have lots of things in boxes still from our 1.5 month stay at UAB and our 2 month of impatient at Shepherd Center!
Gray had fun, Tennessee won, and we carved pumpkins!!! All in all it’s been a great day!

Day 29 of Outpatient
💪🏼
Thursday
💪🏼

Physical Therapy: Virtual reality balance board! Gray went skiing, shot a bow and arrow and went through a maze! It’s so crazy week to week to see how much he improves!
Occupational Therapy: He worked on his reaction time on the Dynavision Board. He also was given a story to type on the computer to work on multitasking and fine motor.
Music Therapy: Papa bought Gray a guitar last week to help build fine motor strength in both hands. Gray let his music therapist know about this and they are now practicing playing Rocky Top! I love how creative they get with therapy from head to toe!
Physical Therapy: He worked on his lower legs…calf raises and scissor jumps. Then standing jumps and step up knee raises.
Adolescent Group: The teenagers meet once a week and share their stories and talk!
Tonight for dinner we went to eat at the Revolving Sushi Factory in Kennesaw! It was DeLiCiOuS!
😋

Happy Sunday
🙏🏻

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We enjoyed every minute of our time with family and friends! We are almost back to our apartment in Atlanta to get the 2 week countdown started to our discharge!
We have been reflecting as we drove home tonight on the last several months at Shepherd and we are still in awe how specific and detailed they have been with Grays therapy! We are so thankful God placed us here!
The picture below is of Gray practicing Rocky Top!
🧡

5. Step ups
6. Leg raises
Speech: Did his weekly Synchrony test which measures swallow strength. Also did the IOPI test that measures lip and tongue strength. Both continue to improve!!
❤️

OT: worked his left shoulder and hand playing different games on the computer board. Also did eye exercises to strengthen the left eye to help him not see double.
Neuro Psychologist: Weekly check in!
Tomorrow is a big test for Gray. It will last 7-8 hours with an hour lunch break. This measures cognitive, physical, Neuro, and many other areas. We are hoping to get approval to go back to school in January and learn what modifications he will need!
Prayer request:
Please pray with us as we take our next step in this journey…continuing our physical, occupational, and speech therapy for Grayson back home. We have a couple places we have researched but no decision yet. We are leaning on the Lord for guidance, peace, and confidence in what we pick.
Also pray for Grays ENT scope Monday as well as his hearing test. We think he may have some hearing loss in his left ear! Praying for a positive visit and no damage in his throat or ear!
Lastly, please pray with us as we go to the Cardiologist when we get back to Trussville. Praying his increase heart rate was just due to some of his medications and nothing heart related!
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Happy Saturday! While the boys went hunting again today, I unpacked some stuff we brought back from Atlanta and decorated our house for Christmas!
I am so thankful David and Grayson are able to hunt together this year! This is some thing David has wanted to do for a while but Gray played fall baseball! The time they are spending together and memories they are making will last a lifetime!
One more week and we move back home!
Below is the first deer Gray ever shot!
