Didn't the original burn down? About what year did that happen?
The Varsity Inn is probably what you're thinking of that was further up Cumberland towards Ruby Tuesday's.i thought the old Sam and Andy's was up closer towards the Ruby Tuesday? i was a wee little tyke when i was eating there, so i guess i'm wrong.
a fewplaces on the strip nobody has mentioned, that i think are pretty good.
1. Cool Beans-while not ON the strip, you have to be an idiot to not find it. this is where the young college croud is, if that's what you're looking for.
2. Charlie Peppers-i think it's still a good place to get a meal and a few beers before the game.
3. Stephanos-while not a bar, still good pizza. great pizza actually.
4. Hannahs-i think their food is pretty good too. and they usually have decent drink deals
the Half Barrell (Beer Cellar) should not be any place anybody wants/needs to go to. i was in there a few weeks back and i'm 25. i bet i was 6 years older than the average age in that place. do the math. i'm serious too. they had exactly 0 people working the door.
I loved it when they changed the name to Selvador Deli in an attempt to hide from creditors. That place was classic. They delivered until 3 in the morning. I had more orders of loaded fries from that place than I care to remember.Anyone remember Salvador Deli? I don't remember much about the food, but you could place a delivery order that included food, beer, cigarettes, condoms, tampons, penthouse magazines, KY Jelly, rolling papers, toilet paper, and a list of call-girls.
Putting a crappy chain restaurant like O'Charley's in the same sentence as the Roman Room is just short of blasphemy.Selvador Deli made a mean Calzone, and cheap.
A couple of other observations from reading through this thread.
1. The fire referenced earlier took the original Gus's, which is now rebuilt in the same spot. It also claimed an old red-eye favorite called Stone Mountain, which specialized in blacklight posters, Bob Marley shirts, and Pachtouli, and a decent gyro spot.
2. Charlie Peppers is probably the now longest-standing mainstream establishment, although much of its elder luster for attracting the finest in female opportunity seems passed.
3. For authentic good old Strip times, BigDaddy is right: hit the Longbranch. And don't bring a man-bag.
4. O'Charleys closing ranks just behind the loss of the Lap and Library and Sam and Andy's/Roman Room.
5. The reemergence of Market Square and downtown (which I consider a very good thing), plus the movement out west, has really hurt the strip.
6. I'm punching the next person who claims the "longevity" of Buffalo Wild Wings.
Ashley's never came back because the guys who owned it were the ones who set the fire.oh, and the place that burned down next to Gus's was formerly Ashley's. It was kind of a Greek place...they had great gyros and calzones....it never came back, of course Gus's did and is still gong strong. the biggest thing for that place for me, was late night dining. I don't think i've ever set foot in there during daylight.
Ahh yes the wizard where you could get 32 oz beers for 2 bucks and see Alan Houston playing Neogeo and eatings wings from Spicey's. And yes the Branch has been open for long since 1995 that is when I started to go there. It actually used to be across the street and has been on the strip for as long as I can remember. There are some great times had in that place and many more to come. But yes, the strip has become way more corp. now than ever. When I lived in the Fort, I was walking to Hannah's, OCI, Tap Room, Lap/Library, and that place called Dante's/San Antonio Taco/something new every year/ and Flamingo's. Or I could just walk around the Fort to find a keg party. Or hang out at Gryphon's.
When I lived in the 4th/Gill area, it was Sassy Ann's, Manhattan's, Lucille's, and the big Breweries.
I even went to the Electric Wizard a couple of times.
yeah, it's still there, at least it was last year when i went...was still the same...pretty cool place. Lots of folks go there after the game for dinner and drinks, and the upstairs is still fairly popular for pre game libations.how's the copper cellar doing? I went to the website and the building looks nice. I know it's not a party atmosphere but I remember it from my days with season tickets.
Also, are there still the tennessee merchandise shops along that side? I think there was 2-3 of them.
