To be fair, the last time our gov't got serious about balancing the budget was when Clinton worked with Gingrich to do it in the 1990s. One big difference is that the opposing party worked in tandem with the White House in this endeavor whereas now the Dems are fighting it tooth and nail

Clinton rolled our SS (which was supposed to be outside the general budget for good reason) into the general budget and claimed he'd balanced the budget.
