We should have clipped China's wings years ago instead of making them a trading partner and funding their military. But stupid is as stupid does. Trade was always going to be a one way affair; China may have the world's greatest population, but except for a limited number of goods, China is no market for US goods. China will only reverse engineer what they can of those ... when they can't just steal the technology.
It's probably better to face the facts now rather than give China more time to prepare. Australian patrol pilots have said that Chinese fighters cut across in front of their plane and ejected chaff and flares - both dangerous and provocative. China has reached out to the Solomon Islands - with part of the treaty allowing China to station police (troops?) if necessary. Imagine fighting twice in a hundred years for a place like Guadalcanal. For the short term China still has a weakness - the engines for their advanced fighter aircraft, but we'll give them time to perfect that, too.
