In 2003, I was making ~$12/hr as a machinist and was paying $300 for a Honda Civic/month and ~$600/month rent (by myself/no need for a roommate) at a nice/decent spot in a mid-tier southern city. $400/month for a car 20 years later at the rate inflation is right now isn't unreasonable and I doubt that $600/month today is going to have you living in as safe and comfortable of a place as I was in 20 years ago.To be fair, the younger generation is also the main force behind a push to work from home. That’ll save off that gas expense. From there, don’t get a car with a $400 payment and get a roommate or two split. It’s much cheaper going in together on multiple BRs than it is to go single.
It does suck for a while but if they stick around at a job more than a year, actually try to build a career rather than just having jobs and manage expenses well they will be fine. It’s not easy but it never has been and there’s no instant gratification unless a rich relative dies or they win the lottery that they can’t afford to play.
It’s not an unreasonable payment for someone getting a car that’s 3-4 years old or newer. But guess what sourpuss? If you can’t afford it then don’t do it. It’s that simple. I never said anything about inflation or standard of living but you can make $100K or more a year and still be flat broke if you don’t manage expenses. That’s the point so go to bed and stop whining about your own generation. In 2003, I was making ~$12/hr as a machinist and was paying $300 for a Honda Civic/month and ~$600/month rent (by myself/no need for a roommate) at a nice/decent spot in a mid-tier southern city. $400/month for a car 20 years later at the rate inflation is right now isn't unreasonable and I doubt that $600/month today is going to have you living in as safe and comfortable of a place as I was in 20 years ago.
Some of you Boomers and (sadly) Gen-Xers are real azzholes if you don't see or acknowledge how far our standard of living has fallen due to money printing and inflation.
Things have to reset at some point. I couldn’t buy into the neighborhood we live in now. It’s crazy.Saw this today:
A house up my street, smaller than ours with no pool or view, not really updated, sold for $580k in 2018. It's on the market for $1.2M with a Zestimate monthly payment of $7,100.
Our neighborhood is nice but only mid-upper Farragut. Who in the world is buying these places?
90 grand a year in mortgage alone????
It's ridiculous.

And you missed the point. $12/hr 20 years ago went a lot further than it does today. It’s not an unreasonable payment for someone getting a car that’s 3-4 years old or newer. But guess what sourpuss? Of course it does sourpuss. Literally no one says otherwise. That’s now a starting pay at fast food restaurants though, even in states with a lower minimum wage. If someone is making $12/hour now they’re either just starting out or not trying. And you missed the point. $12/hr 20 years ago went a lot further than it does today.
But here you go with "muh bootstraps" lectures.
Will they ever git rid of this incompetent POS who only reads answers from a notebook?
I guess they'd just replace her w/ John Kirby which is another lying incompetent POS.
Two houses down in my neighborhood recently sold to a Japanese company who has immediately put it up for rent. I looked it up on the county assessor website. Yamasa Co ltd.Saw this today:

Interesting. Seems like a risky investment, with housing prices so inflated. What happens when the market corrects and people aren't willing to pay $4000-6000/m in rent, and the value of the homes drops 30-40+%?Two houses down in my neighborhood recently sold to a Japanese company who has immediately put it up for rent. People still need places to live. I'm guessing they're looking at it as a long term investment. Whether rent goes up or rent comes down, it's still money coming in.Interesting. You were the one talking ish about a $400 car payment when I'm telling you that isn't exactly an outrageous amount compared to 20 years ago. And I'm sure that is for a used car.Of course it does sourpuss. Literally no one says otherwise.
And here again, you ignore (or simply DGAF) about the impact of inflation on standard of living. That is evidence of how far it has slipped in this country. Meanwhile, "muh bootstraps"...That’s now a starting pay at fast food restaurants though, even in states with a lower minimum wage.
