It saddens me to read so many posts echoing the poo flinging of both parties. Stepping away from the toilets and looking honestly at the economy, inflation was a world-wide post-pandemic problem. It wasn’t and isn’t the fault of either party or their priorities.
Biden and the Democrats did pass bills which boosted employment investing in infrastructure and manifested a commerce policy that favored production within the US. One can argue that these put upward pressure on inflation that was already in the world economy recovering from the pandemic, but one has to acknowledge that these benefited the pace of US recovery and allowed working Americans to bargain for higher pay. Meanwhile, the Fed’s policy to rein in inflation has been working.
In the recent elections, the Democrats failed to leverage their efforts to improve the wellbeing of citizens during a challenging period of world economic recovery. The Republicans did effectively leverage the citizenry’s pain from inflation. Whatever the party, politicians have played on economic circumstances (eg 1980, 1992, 2024) to their advantage in elections.
I’m not interested in an autopsy of the Democrats’ missteps in the recent elections. I am hopeful that behind the rhetoric, the Republicans know that their victory was an expression of the citizens disaffection and not the mandate they’re claiming. Promoting continuing investment building production of critical strategic components in the US is key.
